I am not sure about SS, but I heard that GTO meant gas, tires and oil. Maybe the SS is the SS part of SSDD. The top stock class in the 1960's was Super Stock and the cars that raced this class had S/S painted on them. Chevrolet appropriated this for their cars calling them Super Sports like Pontiac did with Transam. Trans/am was a road racing class for 5.0 liter sedans. None of Pontiac's Transams qualified to race this class. It was dominated by the Camaro Z-28.
