I was thinking about purchasing them but I'd be very pissed off after going through the trouble and some a**hole took them off to be spiteful.

IMO, those devices advertise the vehicle owner is fastidious about keeping the car undamaged. Exactly what you don't want to do with a thug bent on damaging your car.
Low profile it when parking in public, don't make your car stand out. |

Do they go horizontal with the door or are they the ones that go down the doors edge?

I wouldn't go with the door defenders but having Clear Bra on the doors paid for itself within 4 weeks of having the car.
 Inch and a half embedded verticle white paint  once removed left no dent and impact mark can only be seen if pointed out.

Yep, I use one door defender on the drivers side. It's made of totally clear gel, so doesn't look too obtrusive. The reason i did it, was because I drive down a 9 foot wide alleyway to get into the yard at work, and I have to get out and open or close a gate. In the past I've had the wind catch a door and smash it straight into the wall, so a little lump of gel is a much better option than a dinged door.
