LFX Engine Oil Cooler
Just read that the LFX in the 2012 Impala has an engine oil cooler. Since the 2012 V6 is the LFX and the LLT shares largely the same components. Of course this is only speculation, but we may have an engine oil cooling option.
http://media.gm.com/media/us/en/chev..._ppv/2012.html Impala Police performance The new LFX3.6L V-6 becomes the standard engine in the 2012 Impala Police, replacing the previous 3.9L engine and delivering 31-percent more horsepower. The 302-horsepower (225 kW) LFX is a 60-degree design, with the cylinder block and cylinder heads cast in aluminum for low weight. A forged steel crankshaft provides optimal strength in the bottom end, while the cylinder heads include four valves per cylinder, with a dual overhead camshaft design incorporating infinitely variable cam phasing. Additionally, optimized-flow fuel injectors and the integrated exhaust manifolds/cylinder heads promote lower emissions. The LFX’s composite intake manifold also has a comparatively small radiated surface area to help it maintain excellent noise and vibration characteristics that are comparable to an aluminum manifold. The 3.6L engine is backed by a new six-speed automatic transmission that is performance-calibrated for police duty. Additional powertrain and vehicle system features include: 2.44 axle ratio. 170-amp high-output alternator. Engine oil, transmission and power steering coolers. Seventeen-inch wheels replace the 2011 models’ 16-inch wheels. Goodyear P235/55R17 W rated tire

I'm trying to get some more details, hopefully some part numbers. I'd assume the LFX on the caprice's has the same oil cooler.

It has several benefits. Oil breaks down over time, the hotter the oil gets, the faster it breaks down. By lowering the working temperature of the oil, the quality of the oil lasts longer. Cooling and extending the life of the oil also extends the life of the engine. The cooler an engine runs, the longer it will last.

My P71 crown vic used to have a oil cooler lol. Although it is a nice addition one thing you have to realize is that our engine oil is full of moisture. One of the reason why gm does not always let our motor stay cool is because the moisture need to be boiled out. The temp has to be 212F and over for this to occur. In a situation where massive heat is a concern like a police cruiser that stay idling over 12hrs per day, or in a race specific situation where taking the motor to the limit is a dalily job an oil cooler will be necessary. Just make sure whatever oil cooler you guys get it has a thermostat built in. You don't want the motor to stay to cool at all times keeping moisture in and causing corrosion and other problems in the long run.

It's great that GM finally put a 6spd auto in the Impala and that they put the 300+ LFX in also, but a 2.44 axle ratio? Are you kidding me! At least put 2.92 in, or something. I know the6 spd has more advantageous gearing but in the real world these tranny shift up to the next higher gear so fast that you don't get a chance to use the extra power.

OEM fit and finish may be nice. In the meantime, has anyone installed an aftermarket oil cooler on the LFX yet? Details / Write-up?

For those that may be interested, I found someone that is working on an aftermarket adapter to allow an oil cooler on some BMW motors that have a similar oil filter setup as we do (cartridge). He said he would be interested in designing and producing a quantity for the LFX if there was enough interest.
