If you are getting a free car, shut up and take it.

Sorry if that sounds mean, but jeez! It's a free friggin car!

Just curious, how old are you? Is this your first car?

I bought both my kids their first cars; my daughter got a new 2006 Scion tC, and my son got a new 2008 Scion tC. I picked the cars, as I was paying for them, and I made sure they both had the all the extra airbags.

They got cars they could mod if they wanted, they were good 4 bangers that got decent mileage, and I knew that with their displacement, they weren't going to kill themselves with a lot of power.

If I had to get them a car today as their first, or if they were in their mid teens, I wouldn't buy them a V8 Camaro.

...and if he's paying for 15-20K of it, he's paying for most of it.

If it were me, I'd say "Thanks for buying me a brand new car, dad. If I do well in school, don't get arrested for DUI or for doing something else stupid with this car, and generally take good care of it, could we talk about trading up to a Camaro in a few years?"

it makes no sense...BUT...your dad does have the right to say what he will spend HIS money on, so if i was you I'd take whatever dad is willing to help you with and be grateful. You can always get exactly what you want down the road.

Spinner, you're 16. Do you have a job to pay for your own vehicle or are you pretty much expecting daddy to cover the expense of the car? If its door #2, you really shouldn't be complaining much about anything considering you're getting a newer car to replace your supposedly crappy vehicle that you drive now for FREE. Your dad has his opinions and seems to stand firm that FORD and BMW are respectful and good companies that he endorses to drive and as well have his son own as well for safety, comfort, etc.

Either take the free car or get ready to start bagging groceries for your V8 Camaro.
