Wow that is a little over priced, i guess if you are paying close to 10 bucks a quart.

we get the AMSOIL 5W30 100% synthetic and the tranny fluids changed for less than that,,, but again thats draining the fluids DYI style

I want to bump this to ensure that 8.6 quarts is correct with a filter change.
I can't find it in the manual.

Hemlawk,
I just did my first oil change a few days ago at about 500 miles on my LS3. I used 2, 1 gallon jugs of Mobil1 (8 quarts) and an ACDelco PF48 oil filter. That put the oil level to the top of the hash marks on the dip stick. Just now, I went out to check the oil level again (it's been parked for about 3 hours since driving it today) and it still reads the same after 3 days of normal driving. I'd say 8.0 quarts is the right amount of oil with the ACDelco filter anyway. Could it be that other brands of oil filters are bigger? I know that on my older chevy small block trucks (I'm talking from the 60s and 70s) there were some bigger oil filters available for "heavy duty" use, they were the same diameter, just taller and held more oil. That might explain the extra 0.6 qt. that some are needing?
By the way, look in the manual on page 12-2 under Capacities and Specifications. It says 8.0 qt of "engine oil with filter", 6.2L V8 Engines, both L99 and LS3. (with recommended ACDelco PF48 oil filter, page 11-9)

Thanks buddy!
I just bought 2 Mobile1 jugs, a Mobile1 filter and Ramps.
Going to change to oil right now. I'm at 1300 miles now. Thats pretty good considering I've owned it less than 2 weeks.

I wonder what the Trucks with the L92 use for an oil filter. PF1 maybe? That has always been a way of adding more capacity.

Where the heck did anyone get 8.6 from? The manual on 12-2 shows clearly 8.0 quarts.

Or you could just go by the oil life indicator...which I guarantee will be longer than just every 3k. In my opinion on newer cars it's a waste of time and money to change every 3k unless it calls for it in the manual. I guess if you have tons of cash to throw away though...and nothing to do...

You are all guessing unless you have the oil tested...

Where'd you get a 1 gallon jug? The jugs I buy of M1 are 5 qts, not 4.

I did my first oil change at 1007 miles, and plan to just do them on the 5s (5K, 10K, 15K, etc) that will keep it real simple and easy to remember when to do them. In the past when running M1 I usually would go 5-7K, judging on how dirty the oil was and how hard I drove it since the last oil change.

As for filling mine, I think I put slightly over 8 in, I'll have to check. I usually put oil in up to about a half quart lower than specified. I then check it, as long as it is over the L mark, I fire the engine up and go for a spin, then come home, let it sit a few minutes, check it again, and add any that is needed.

I know O'Reilly's carry's 4 quart jugs. But yeah most places have 5qt.

Yup, I got my 1 gallon jugs of Mobil1 at O'Reilly's. Worked out great. This last oil change I went to Wal-Mart for the oil and filter. They didn't have the 1 gallon jugs, only the 5 quart jugs and single quart bottles. I went with 8 quart bottles this time. Got the ACDelco PF48 filter there too. Saved about $7.50 over O'Reilly's.
I like the 5000 mile oil change intervals too, keeps it simple and easy to remember. My car has about 1900 miles on it now. I changed engine oil at 500 miles and then at 1500 miles. Changed out the transmission and differential fluids too at 1500 miles too. I'm thinking I'll change engine oil next at 5000 miles and then every 5000 from then on.

I put 8 quarts of Mobile 1 in my LS3 today and the dip stick reads 1/2 quart low. But that is what the manual says to do. I am running a Mobil 1 oil filter. It looked to be the same size as the AC delco one. I doubt the oil filter holds anymore.
