Dash cams
Anyone have any recommendations or buying tips for a good dashboard-mounted video camera?

Would a GoPro work for you? I know they have tons of different mounting brackets. I love the one i have.

I use a Countour HD camera with their suction cup mount. Works beautifully.

GoPro. Tons of accessories and takes good quality pics. 99% of my friends who tape their rides use it. If it stays on a high vibration ride on a flimsy windscreen, it will work good on a car's dash/windshield.

Looked up some comparison videos and reviews of the GoPro and ContourHD. The GoPro is more expensive, but it appears to offer slightly better quality recordings (especially in changing lighting conditions - example comparison video here). I do prefer the CountourHD's size and shape, though; it seems better for mounting as a helmet cam and such.
Thanks for the recommendations!

Had one of the very first Go Pros, sold it to a friend who drag races. Now I have been looking again for the past month and opted for the Contour HD. Go Pro and Contour are both very close as far as pricing and video quality from what I have seen. Should get the Contour thursday. Ordered the Contour HD, suction cup mount, car charger, 32 gig card, uv filter all for 300 shipped. Would love to get the Contour plus but 500 is a bit more that I want to spend.
If you should get a Contour like the Contour GPS you can get the connect view card and use your Ipod etc to see what the camera sees and adjsut settings rather than having to use the computer to do it. If you have cash to blow I would get ChaseCam Diva HD I was also thinking about what a guy could do with a camcorder. I may get a suction cup mount that allows you to attach a small camcorder and attach it to the left or right quarter window and aim it out the back. The mount is suppose to support 5 lbs. Can get decent HD camcorders for cheap nowadays but since I have and HD camcorder with 60 gig hd I may try it first. |

I ended up getting the GoPro Hero HD. So far, I am pretty impressed with it. The optional LCD Backpac was pretty much a necessity, IMO.
My only real quibble with the GoPro is the mount system. There is no available ball-and-socket mount for the GoPro. The suction cup mount with the GoPro Motorsports Hero leaves a lot to be desired with respect to range-of-motion, even with the additional arm attached to it. Fortunately, you can get an adapter for the GoPro so that it works with the RAM mount system, which is much better thanks to the ball-and-socket joints.
