+1 for the prep towel!

A neighbor of mine pays me to wash and wax her car twice a year. I've never clayed her car because that would take a few hours extra. I recently started using a Speedy Prep Towel on my car, and figured I'd use it hers. It only took about ½ hour. She actually came back over and asked what I'd done differently this time because it "feels smooth as silk." I really think the prep towel gave it that extra "oomph" it needed.

If you use clay, give a prep towel a try - you won't regret it!

Was going to buy one but went with the sponge type instead. I've never clayed my car in the 6 years of owning it so we will see what kind of job it does. I've never clayed anything but I liked the idea of being able to wash away dirt or whatever if I dropped it vs having to throw clay away.

The SM Arnold Speedy Prep towel has been one of the best purchases I've made for detailing.

Amazon has it for $35.49, which is much less then the detail stores who charge $55 to $60 dollars for it.

You can also check paint stores in your area. I picked one up at a PPG store for $33.

It's important to get the FINE grade, as the medium is very aggressive and can cause marring.

So many advantages, never have to knead, just rinse with warm water, no pressure required, just glide it across surface.

If you drop it on the ground, you simply rinse well with warm water and continue.

A clay kit will cost you $20 @ wally world or the auto stores, may get 5-6 cars done with it, but you'll have to buy more lube after the first car.

This towel and bottle of Ultima Water Wash Plus Concentrate and you can clay 30 cars. The towel lasts up to 100 cars so it's just getting good and broke in after the first 30.

From a cost effective standpoint, it's hard to beat. Along with saving lots of time vs. clay, and being easier on your body, makes it a no brainer.

EDIT: It's also important to "break it in" on the first use by using it on the glass, it comes with a protective coating on it to ensure no contaminates are stuck to it during packaging, this coating will come off easily when used on glass, it's OK to use light pressure when using it on glass. Fold it in quarters, and use 1 section for front, 1 for each side, and one for rear.

You can also put numbers on the back of it so you can flip it when doing paint after a section or 2.

Joe, of all the advice you've given me, convincing me to get a prep towel was probably the best.

I can't take any credit for it. I learned about it from Matt (CD07).

PREP TOWEL!!!!
It is the best investment I have made -- my two cars are a Camaro and a Yukon - it has cut the time of claying the cars by two hours.
Here are the products I use to detail. Once every year or two, I may throw in the IronX too.
Of course, when I'm not doing a complete detail, I'll use Adam's Car Shampoo, no DAWN!

Not trying to hi-jack this thread but I just purchased the speedy prep towel thanks to y'all. I have Blackfire SRC Compound and finishing polish but went with Menzerna Powerlock for the sealant. Did I make a mistake? Seems like most use All Finish Paint Protection.

Replying because I tried EVERYTHING on the market, LOL

I used the powerlock for 2 yrs now. I now swear by the ALL Finish Paint Protection, I feel it lasts longer than the powerlock and also use complete BF line.
Pics or it didn't happen LOL!!

The powerlock is a good sealant, very easy to apply and use, and mates well with wax if you want to top it.

Again, BE SURE to break the towel in on the glass to remove the protective factory coating on it!

Fold it in quarters like the video shows, 1 side on windshield, 1 side on drivers side, 1 side on passenger, 1 side on back glass.

Rinse towel with hose or in a bucket with grit guard, then start on paint.

Be sure car has been washed, paint is cool to the touch, and your in the shade. No need to dry car after washing.

Use plenty of lube, spray a section around 2'x2' to 3'x3', also spray some lube on the section of the towel your going to use on the paint. Glide it across surface with only enough pressure to keep it on surface, very light.

You'll hear and feel the contaminates, as soon as it runs smooth, use a high quality microfiber to remove clay residue, I like RC Everest 1100's, but use what you like, as long as it's a high quality towel.

If the car has never been clayed before, flip it after each section to a fresh side. If it only has light contamination, you can use it for 2-3 sections before flipping.

Check your section after completion with a sandwich baggie to ensure all contaminates are removed.

If you drop the prep towel on the ground, take it to a sink and rinse well with warm water before continuing.

Once your done with polising the car, Do a wipe down with a 10% Isopropyl Alcohol/Distilled water mixture, or Carpro Eraser.

This will remove any residue you may have missed and ensure the powerlock bonds to the paint.

Apply/remove your powerlock. For longest protection with it, apply a second coat 12 hours after first has been removed.
