Salt Etching

If they are your winters you will never keep up to bare unprotected aluminum suface! If you get them back to new looking you should have them clear coated or painted...else it will return no matter what!

Definitely clear them, not that expensive.

But good luck getting that out, I'm sure one of the methods on here will work.

I see London.... I see France!! This "etching" on your wheels looks more like the cloudy atmosphere & land masses of Earth from high orbit. I think what might have really happened here was the I.S.S. was beaming pictures of the earth's atmosphere back to NASA and somehow got laser etched on your wheels. You have to bring those wheels inside to avoid further accidental lasering. If you look closely enough, you might also see a Boeing 747 flying across the etched sky. But what do I know, it seems like a good story to share with your buddies after a few beers.

It is not from the salt. I think its from the brake dust. My wheels did the exact same thing while I was away for about 9 months. The car was clean but I had my wife drive it a couple miles every week. I think the dust ate into the finish, thats all I can come up with. I traded the car in right after getting home, so I am no help on how to fix it. I tried to buff it out and it did not put a dent in it.

Are your wheels polished or Midnight Silver? This is called Crow's Feet. It is clearcoat failure. It is easily repairable. The wheel must be sanded down with sandpaper until the clear is gone. You must then, if they are Midnight Silver, repaint the wheel then apply a new layer of clear coat over it. If they are polished aluminum, you need to polish the aluminum really well, then clean all of the oils off of the aluminum with some kind of wipe down, then you need to respray clearcoat onto the wheels. If you don't feel comfortable doing this on your own, I'd suggest taking it to a professional wheel repair man. They will be able to do it with ease, and at a reasonable price.

precisely why SB doesn't see the main roads in the winter time. road treatments, salt, ashe, etc. feel your pain though. get a pitt in my stomach when I discover the slightest imperfection. when you take pride in your cars appearance it can really ruin your day!

If these are GM wheels, you should look at getting them warrented.
That type of corrosion is called "filiform". It happens on polished wheels between the clear coat and metal.
