Lifters in LSX block.

Does anyone know if lifters can be changed in an LSX block through the windows in the valley without removing the heads? Looking at the block, it looks like it might be possible.

It depends on what type lifters you have some can be changed through the windows.

I have an LSX block with LS3 lifters. When I put it together I put them in in the normal fashion and didn't think anything about it.
Now I'm wondering if I can remove them for inspection.
I saw a picture in a magazine that showed stock lifters next to aftermarket ones with the link bar-which were much taller-next to the windows in the block. It looked like you could change out the stock lifters, but the aftermarket looked to tall to do it.

Can you get the trays out or loosen the trays though with the heads on?

If the lifter trays will come out you can probably get the lifters out. Some link bar lifters will come out through the windows.

I think the trays will come out OK. I know the bolt can be loosened.
I'm probably going to find out for sure here in the next couple of weeks.
I have high iron in my oil sample.
I'm going to start with the Comp trunnions that I have had excessive wear on before, and see where that leads.

The trays and lifters will come out through the windows in the block with the heads on. I checked it out on a engine we had here in the shop.

Outstanding! Thank you for checking that.
I really didn't want to pull heads just to get at the lifters.

Is this just for an LSX block and not an LS3?

just LSX blocks. all other LS motors require heads to be removed.

Dart, and ERL motors also have the large windows so lifters can be swapped without removing heads.
