P Zero;s In the winter in North Carolina
I live in Charlotte, North Carolina, I just found out that I will be getting laid off from my job and will not have the money to put winter tires on my Camaro. Has anyone in the Camaro family driven with the summer tires in Charlotte NC. It will be my DD and I am going to have to start looking for jobs and can not risk being stuck at home. I know that it does not snow very often in NC but I am getting really worried that this year is going to be a bad year and I am going to be stuck at home not being able to get out of the drive way.

My brother went all winter last year on almost bald summer only tires in his HHR SS, in Ohio winter. Somehow he survived without wrecking, and he's a terrible driver to begin with. You should be fine as long as you take it slooooooooow.

I am in Georgia and it does get below freezing. When its cold, baby the car. Do not drive if there is any hint of snow or ice on the road. Otherwise, you will be fine. The tires will heat up the longer you drive.

If you are on the pzeros you are going to have a really really hard time. search the threats on winter tires here and you will find countless stories of no traction with just a little snow on the p zeros. I wish you luck but while you still have it should try and get a set of scorpions ice and snow then you'd be just fine.

Good luck and just take it very easy in temps around and below 40*.
I did not want to take the chance another winter here in Ft. Worth so I installed the Conti DWS all season tires last week. |

I've been in Fayetteville, just a little east of you, going on 30 years and I've never worried about winter tires here. At east when it snows or we get an ice storm everything is closed down for days anyway, to include most places of business etc. I wouldn't worry about spending additional funds on winter tires, as the others have said, just take it easy and if the roads are slick, just don't lock up the brakes. I don't think you have anything to worry about.
Edit - And good luck with the job hunt!

I got my Camaro in Dec of 2010 and let me tell you its not fun driving in cold or snow with pzeros. I try not to drive my car in bad weather period anyways. My suggestion is find a way to get some better tires or risk wrecking the car in snow and/or ice.

You'll be fine, just slow down and use some common sense while driving.

Like others said. Be careful. It's been unseasonably cold here and 40 and below traction is limited on the p-zero's. I've driven in light snow/slush, no problem with the summer tires.
I usually swap them for my winter tires late November. |
