Told by dealer that I MUST use synthetic oil?
So I got my inspection done today and got a phone call from the dealer telling me my oil change notification is on. I said I know and that I'd take care of it myself.
He told me to MAKE SURE I use synthetic oil and that its required and that if anything would ever happen to the engine and if they did an oil test and find it not synthetic I would be held responsible. Now, at this point he wasn't trying to get a sale and was obviously aware that I was doing it myself. So it wasn't some scare tactic or anything so what gives? Did I miss this somewhere? I've seen enough threads about the benefits of synthetic and changing to it so is he just wrong? I've never checked the manual, I'll have to when I go pick her up.

You're fine with a GM approved conventional oil. Only the L99/LS3 require synthetic. The V6s can use syn. and probably is recommended but not required.

That would be a big negative and the dealer is only trying to get more money out of you since you have the V6.

The conventional oil in the LLT & LFX is what contributes to the timing chain stretch issues. That motor should NEVER have conventional or syn blend. ONLY full syn. Now, I'm just an engine builder and performance parts designer so what do I know.

It is possible that your dealer failed to properly understand what GM wants him to say. It is GM policy to encourage a synthetic blend now. It doesn't have to be full synthetic. The blend is better for engines than conventional oil. Of course, I would recommend Mobil 1, a full synthetic, for long life and performance.

I don't know what the deal was, he specifically said "you want to make sure you use synthetic, if you use regular crude oil and something happens and they test the oil it will be your engine then".
Like I said, he definitely wasn't trying to do the service at this point, just trying to be helpful. Either he thought it was an SS or is just incorrect.

After learning the difference between conventional and synthetic, there is no way I will ever use anything but synthetic. Conventional is truly inferior and therefore obsolete. Settle for nothing less for your Camaro IMHO.

Cadillac says only synthetic in their CTS with the LLT, but Chevy says it's okay to use conventional and put an oil life monitor that says it's okay to go forever on an oil change. Synthetic is not that much more expensive in the 5-qt jugs at Wal-mart, if you're doing it anyway, is it not worth the $10 or so difference for the peace of mind?
