E85 and forced induction?
Hey guys, I was just curious if any of you were running E85 with your FI set ups? I've heard there can be some decent power gains but I'd need a different fuel pump and obviously an updated tune, right? I just upgraded to the ZL1 pump with ADM controller but it sounds like I'll need a different pump and possibly injectors? Not sure that it's worth it for me, but I was curious to see what you've seen for power gains? Is it worth it?

Never been on a dyno, sorry. Worth it? YES.
105 octane, 23* advance at 9+ psi boost. Additional fueling required is around 30%. Livernois dual fuel pump and ID850's at 82% injector duty cycle. .78 PE Lambda. Mods listed in garage. Somewhere north of 600 whp as I have logged 60-100 mph in 3.7 sec via HPTuners Scanner software. Catless, no obnoxious exhaust smell and still get 16+ mpg running more advance than stock at cruse to aid the mpg.

I'm not a huge fan of E85, it isn't regulated well. Meaning that the octane rating can be north of 100 the day you dyno, but then when you go to the track it could be in the 80s. My all about a nice recipe for detonation, right?
If you use a flex fuel sensor you should be a little safer, but E85 will always have looser regulation than straight unleaded. |

Well, to each their own but living 20 miles from the corn plant and testing my E85 for the last 5 years, it's been 85% until the fall when it changes gradually to E70 for the winter. I store mine from first snow after Thanksgiving until spring when all the salt is washed off the roads so it never sees the winter blend.

E85 is flat out awesome for boosted cars! plus it smells like caramel and french fries when burning In az it's regulated to be no less than 105 octane. You will need a pump and injectors to support 30% more fuel at the same power level you are currently making. We run E85 in so many cars here we have quickly become the go to shop in az for e85 questions. If I can be of any assistance in planning a fuel system to do it or just ask any other questions you have please don't hesitate to pm, email, or call.

What fuel pumps that are out there are suited to use e85 for 600+whp for the 5th gen

Maybe, but E85 is becoming readily available at many gas stations. You can't just pull over and fill up with Methanol.

I ran nothing but E85 in my GTR. Upgraded pumps is a must! Not only for added flow but it's also highly corrosive! My twin pumps used Teflon internals. Bigger injectors too. I ran 1150cc's and made 600+ all day!

Yes but methanol is not always in use....only when it is needed. The mpg loss (especially if the car is driven daily/often) doesn't seem worth it to me.

I DD'd my GTR and yes you do go through a TON of it! Like a tank and a half a week. Half a tank more than my 93 map. I only made 50+/-whp peak more, but made 200lbft more tq at 3500rpms!
I ran 100% meth injection in my 750whp C6. DD'd that car before the GTR as well. One tank of 93 a week, and 1.5 gal of meth every 3-4 fill up. Or one weekend depending on my driving style that week. Both have there advantages. E85 for ease of use, if you can get it. I had 2 maps on the car so if I couldn't fine it on a road trip. Not too many pumps out my way. I like meth because you don't use it much unless you want to. Mine came on at 5psi, and full spray up to 12psi. It does an AMAZING job of lowering IATs!! So for dd it's not bad. Meth has more parts that can fail, and your tuner better know what he's doing and use the proper safety's!! Pick your poison, but I love both!! |
