Check to see if the speedometer cable is firmly secured to the tailshaft of the tranny.

I think the cable connection can go bad on the gauge side as well if the tranny side looks ok.

i already had the shop take a look at it and it was working fine. is there like a senser that could read this in any way or a fuse.

If it needs to be replaced then yea the cluster has to come out. There is a way to test it from the transmission side I forget how.

Very much a possibility. 25thanniversary, this would be the sensor on the transmission.
Here is a link to Autozone about the sensor.Autozone VSS sensor

Sensor go bad all the time. In fact we replace more aircraft sensors than anything else.

There is no sensor to my knowledge. I have had this happen on my 84 Chevy Monte Carlo. The coil in mine had gone and had to be redone. You should locate a shop that deals in repairing Speedometers or Tacometers. It cost like 50 bucks to have it re done. You can also swap it out for one that was in a junk yard. You wouldnt need to swap the entire cluster out. All you would have to do is take the Speedo out.

I just got mine fixed it was the cluster they changed the speed sensor and everything turned out it was the cluster. the only bad news for my car since it had 69,000 when it broke i don't know how much miles it has now. but yes change the cluster and it should fix the problem
