cost for a decent paint job?
So I was thinking about getting some stripes for my car, and my wife was like 'don't do vinyl stripes, get them painted on'....I like the way she thinks. Figured if I'm going to look into the stripes being painted on, may as well freshen up the paint on the rest of the car while I'm at it. 45k miles, and a few years of Houston driving have left the factory paint with it's fair share of dings...
Anyone have a clue what a decent paint job should run? Going to call a few shops for estimates (and also to see what they'd charge for a Hex Vent install at the same time) but I have no clue what to expect. I figure it could be 500 for a shitty job, and 5000 for a show quality finish....with a range that broad, I have no clue what's reasonable.... |

Very expensive... Definitely going to be thousands. I would say at least 3.

That's about in line with what I was expecting. I kind of figured anywhere between 3-5 depending on the shop...First shop I called was 4500 for everything. Probably will get about the same from others in the area...
Thanks! |

If I was going to spend that much, I'd consider putting that money toward a trade-in that already has a good paint job (and lower miles).

yeah, not trading it in. Already too into the mods, and wouldn't get shit for it.
After calling a few shops, and getting about the same estimate +/- a little bit, I've decided to deal with the dings and such, and just go vinyl stripes if I'm going to get stripes. Have GOT to do something about under-hood heat, though. Gonna look into either a new hood, or some hex vents now. |

That's the frustrating thing about mods. They can cost a fortune, and it gives the car sentimental value, but dealers couldn't care less. To them, book value is book value, period. And even if you sell it outright, finding a buyer that's impressed enough by those particular mods to pay extra for them is rare.

If it's just dings, get some PDR work done. That will remove them.
There's usually no need to ever need a repaint on a 4 year old car because of normal wear and tear. |

After you fix the paint if you decide I'd invest in a clear bra like xpel ultimate to preserve the paint from rock chips etc.

Here in Washington, my estimates ranged from $6,000 to $8,000! Not sure why paint is so pricey these days!

The average person has no clue on what it takes to paint an entire car the proper way. Removing the hood, doors, locks, handles, antennas, all of the glass, bumpers, belt moldings, mirrors, spoilers, all bumper hardware....basically complete disassembly of the car. Plus, all the jams, strut towers, etc. will all get painted. Hours and hours of prepping, blocking, sanding. Then, once it's painted, sanding, buffing, and polishing. Then, assembly starts all over....gotta be extremely carefully putting the car back together. So really, the $6k-$8k sounds about right.

You get what you pay for :-) PPG Global 4 coats of clear. Supplies alone cost about $2500
