Purpose of the catch-can??
So I observe several folks installing catch-cans on their Z's and am very curious as to why? My understanding is that it is to catch excess oil coming from the crank case, is that correct? If so, why would this happen. What is the overall need/purpose for a catch can? I come from the old school 1st and 2nd gen days so I am trying to catch up on the new technology in these engines. I am good with everything else I see other folks doing but this one has me very curious. Thanks in advance.

Guess you're not getting an answer on that question. LOL.

SCs have their own lube reservoir, and are not lubricated by engine oil.

So with that being said......no need for a catch can! Right?

If you don't mind oil getting into the intake manifold then yeah, not needed.

The SC is oiled by a oil bath with the bearings sealed. You change that every 50-75k miles.
You dont want ANY oil ingestion into the intake air charge in todays engines. Here are the threads to read and learn all there is to know: http://www.camaro5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=102582 http://www.camaro5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=259160 Any oil ingestion is bad and there is no plus to it period. From the detonation it causes imediately to the long term deposits on the valves, intake ports, and piston tops to the intercoller clogging up from the baked on residue to the rotors thrown off balance and the bearing wearing prematurely: http://www.camaro5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=259160 Any detailed info you need to understand it all just ask, have a lifetime of knowledge to share. |

Because the factory doesn't care about modified cars & most (non car) people wouldn't recognize the harm that can come from long term oil ingestion.

They actually do come standard on some high end cars. I do not have access to the places where those decisions are ultimately made but I would suspect that for most of the automotive manufacturers it is just a simple business decision. Do you incur increased costs ($100 isn't much until you multiply it times 100,000+ units a year and realize that comes straight out of your profit) to add a catch can to fix something that will not be a serious issue until after your warranty has expired? Do you add a system that requires the owner to do a maintenance process they are not familiar with and could possibly ignore (draining the can) that then could potentially cause an issue within the term of your warranty? It is as simple as that.
Absolutely. The V6 cars are particularly susceptible to carbon build up because they are direct injection and do not have fuel washing over the intake valves. We have catch cans specific to the V6 cars available on our website. |

Here are pics of the V6 DI motor w/out a properly functioning catchcan (most allow as much through as they catch):
and if it had traditional port injection the valves would look like this using a top tier fuel.....but the DI motors the fuel never touches the intake valves so it is SO critical on any DI motor or any forced induction. |
