SRA would give the Camaro a half second in the quarter?

I have a friend who's a car guy, though admittedly more into old cars. We talk about my new Camaro occasionally, and the other day he said something like this "Its too bad the Camaro doesn't have a solid rear axle". I pointed out its somewhat archaic technology, and IRS gives you better handling performance, he says "well yeah, if you want a smoother ride IRS is better, but a solid rear axle would probably gain it like 1/2 a second in the 1/4 mile." I felt like this was a bit bogus, as there's not a half second's worth of traction issues in the IRS Camaro. Can anyone shed some light on this? Give me their opinions?

SRA is good for straight lines, no doubt. Unless you plan on living at the track, you should be ecstatic the used IRS.

with 20's? no freak'n way. doubt it would make any difference

with 15' wheels and a 28X10.5 slick? ya, it would probably help out a quite a bit.

I have more faith in the R&D at GM and the bean counters than I do random SA/IRS opinions

Grant it, SRA would be a touch better in the 1/4 mile, but look at the bulk of the Camaro buyers, V6 cars for one and only a VERY small percentage of all camaros sold will see a drag strip

It comes down to the $$ and majority sales.

A half second?... Hmm. We'll get an idea on how efficient the powertrain is when we start getting more dyno' numbers, but from the one that I know of, it seems the powertrain is either pretty efficient, or the LS3 is underrated. That being said (opinion only) if those numbers are accurate, I don't see too much a benefit of adding SRA other than strength and weight.

Most of that gain would be in the 60ft time, but probably not a 1/2 second. I like drag racing but I'm glad GM went with IRS. Much better package overall.

No way .. not a half second .. lol ... maybe a tenth or so as I believe you will have a little less drivetrain loss without the IRS and it is a bit easier to launch ..

Eventually you'll read about guys putting sra under the car, but only after they take the rest of the drivetrain torque so hi it breaks. These guys won't be looking for twisty roads to play on.

For daily driving and occasional 1320 runs, IRS should be just fine up to it's gobs of horsepower breaking point.

There's definitely a straight line advantage for a solid axle. This comes from three things:

1) Rear tires are square to the ground (an IRS cambers the tires when the tail squats)
2) Less parasitic losses (IRS has more joints)
3) Less system weight

A half a second sounds overly optimistic for cars in this power range, though. I'd put it more in the range of .15 seconds.

No way would switching to a SRA save an entire half second. Shaving half a second takes some effort in the drag racing world especially when you are in the low 13s/high 12s to begin with.

The SRA should eliminate some wheelhop, but nothing spectacular.

I'm with the others. I would expect maybe 0.2 tenths of an improvement with a SRA.
