My goal is to be quicker overall with more topend and not major loss in torque on the street. Seems as tho when I race from dig or slow roll I do great, but rolling at or above 55 I get taken. Not many tracks here in west Texas...so we make our own on abandoned air base.

VVT for sure, when you can basically degree your cam on the fly, thats a win win. My vvt setup makes over 450 rwhp from about 5900 all the way to 7000 rpms. You will just have better average power and a wider power band with vvt. The specifics will depend on your cam choice and what converter you want to run.

Probably be wise to go with a VVT cam then for a broad powerband but I wouldnt let just anyone install and tune it. I would be taking a drive to Texas Speed and let them do it since they understand it and make parts for it. I think a converter would help you out with your roll races and you should never try from a roll at 55mph unless you are in manual mode. The trans would have to kick down from overdrive so no wonder you are getting killed. Start from 40mph or use manual mode and start in 2nd or 3rd.

You'll need a bigger converter once you cam anyway. You might look into gears as well.

Gears would be great but only if those airstrip races stop by about 135mph. 3.70's would be awesome but they tap out in 4th around 135mph. I would agree that a converter is going to be a must. Heads would be awesome as well but OP wants to stay below 5K so unless he does the work himself I dont see heads in the budget. Maybe if he does heads/cam then saves up for converter/gears later he could do it.

But the ride to 135 would be MUCH FASTER.

Wasn't aware they ran out that soon though.

Really!? Thats crazy. Probably need to ask them who has a handle on the tuning then because I cant think of a shop in TX that does.
Gears and converter do help alot with roll races just be aware that you will tap out at around 135mph with 3.70s and a 3.45 probably wouldnt be worth the hassle. You could use one of the OD gears but I think that would be really hard on the trans. What mph do you guys normally shut it down at?

Yea, unfortunately our technician moves 500 miles across the state last month, so we're sitting ducks looking for a suitable replacement (a tough task considering he was and is the BEST with this platform).

We still handle all the tuning!

If you get a TSP VVT cam they provide the cam phaser tables. It is no different tuning it than any LS engine once you have the cam phaser tables. I just hope you find a better LS tuner than I did lol. VVT FTW
