Had the 6 automatic and got about 32mpg and loved it. Then my new 2ss v8 covertable arrived and yes for the first 1000 miles I got 14mpg. Then it did get better... One trick with the stick that helped alot was to start in 2nd gear not first then at 25mph shift right to 4th then at 35mph right to 6th and cruise. With that and keeping it at 63mph on the highway I get 24 mpg.

Starting in 2nd all the time sounds like hell on the clutch, and those cost money too...and putting it in 6th at 35 mph all the time...thats not doing your engine any favors either...and they're expensive too.

I start in first and shift gears in order every time, unless I hit it hard in the low gears and then skip to 6th because I'm at 70-80+...and I am currently seeing around 22-24 mpg from the car (2SS M6).

Honestly...air the tires up a little (I've been amazed what I can get away with for tire pressure on wider tires without causing them to wear in the center only, and without making the ride much harsher), make sure you use your cruise control whenever you can when you're just commuting (your foot isn't as consistent as the computer is, and that makes a big difference), and consider tuning...but make sure you weigh the cost-benefit of the tune first.

I've found intake mods help mpg more than exhaust mods on most cars (not always the case, but has been my experience).

Anyone saying "holy crap it's at more than $4 a gallon, I need to tune for 87 now"...do the math...usually 89 is 10 cents more than 87, and 93 is 10 cents more than 89, at least around here...so 20 cents a gallon more...and that seems to be the case if 87 is at $2 a gallon, or at $4...so the higher the prices go, the less % difference it is in cost to fill up with 93 over 87, and on an engine that can take advantage of it, your best mpg will be with the higher octane, assuming it's tuned properly, and thus the miles per $$$ (not MPG, MP$) are higher when running it on the high octane and high octane tune.

...say you get 20 mpg on 87, and 22 mpg on 93...thats 10% better mileage. If 87 costs $2.00 and 93 costs $2.20...then it's a wash, and 93 gets your more power at full throttle, so go for it. Now say 87 costs $4.00 and 93 costs $4.20 (which like I said, is usually the case at the pumps)...still gets you 10% better mileage, but only costs 5% more...so suddenly 93 is an even better deal...you still get more power, but you also spent 5% less on fuel to drive the total distance the tank pushed you...get it? (and yes I know if you really do all the math out and don't round, you spend more like 4.55% less on the fuel per distance...whatever)

It wont do much, but maybe adding some Octane Booster, I too have the same issue as you with the sub 15 MPG. But i kept track of my last fill up with the Octane Booster and got a 19. Not too much but anything helps. Plus I am trying to avoid to use the OB too much I heard it can mess up your car.

LOL....last time I looked at my MPG I was only getting like 12.5

I pretty much do only in town driving and I have a very hard time not stretching out the gears and hammering every once in a while.

I'm having way too much fun in this car to worry about it though. I would've bought a LT if I was really concerned with MPG.

If you worry about gas prices, only way to avoid it is to ride a bike!

I have the M6 2SS and my city mpg stayed around 17.4 but most of the time I take off very slow (almost annoyingly slow), shift at 2k rpm and stay well back from the cars in front of me. I push in the clutch and coast up to lights. I basically try to judge the distance so that I would have to use very little brake to stop if the traffic isn't moving by the time I get there. You can cruise at 35-40 in 5th gear. I really use 6th only above 50. The key is that you must down shift if there is a hill or you need to speed up.

I put a CAI on and bumped up to 18.8 MPG. I also have a catback but i doubt that is doing anything. If you really want to see how your driving style affects MPG then reset your average MPG readout and try different starts, cruising etc. Reset it on your way to work and try your normal routine, next day reset again and try having a lot of fun (safely) taking off quick, keeping rpms up then 3rd day rest and try what I do. I did this and round trip (20 miles) I did 15, 10.??, and 17.4.

It's the take off that will kill your MPG and there is no need to drive down the road with your RPM in the 3-4k range. It sounds good but kills MPG. When at a steady speed the car only needs enough HP to fight wind resistance so if your at 1200 rpm that is fine. If you are getting up to 2000 then shift to a higher gear.

Some people can't help but to show off their cars power. Keep the ego in check for the daily grind and save the showboating for the track or when you have safe conditions. Trust me I have tested all the limits of my car but no need to do that daily.

About the only way to save on mileage is to avoid accelerating too hard and breaking too hard and coasting before you stop. Also on the highways keep to the speed limit or below and it'll make a noticeable difference.
