Thinking of adding a strip of molding along my doors
With extreme care to avoid it I got a door ding on my new SS less than 4 days after purchase. Paintless dent guy was able to fix for about $100 which was great but that's not always going to be the case.
I'm thinking about trying to find some type of molding to put along the crease of each door that would be able to absorb the impact of normal careless door dings. Anybody done this yet? I saw the door shox that are available and I'm thiking of trying them out but I hate to stick magnets onto my car. Last edited by jeremy3721; 04-03-2012 at 11:33 PM. Reason: fix title |

So you are saying that you are going to put a molding type of absorber alone the horizontal crease of the doors?
Not my car, but damn I don't think that would look good at all. I had door edge molding on my other camaro along the edge where the door stops right under the handle on the pointy part...but that was to keep me from accidentally dinging other peoples cars.

I'm not to keen on the idea of magnets either, unless they are super strong, eventually they will move. Will that damage the paint? I don't know.
Even the best placed protective moulding (on any vehicle) is not 100% protection against door dings. Depends on the shape of the door that hits it. Although most front doors on vehicles are straight up and down, some back doors are not. So, I think you'd be wasting your money buying anything. You were lucky the "paintless dent" guy could fix it, and I know he's expensive, but hopefully you won't need his services again. I worry more about paint scratches, the kind that go through the clear coat and down to the primer. |

You should get some mud flaps as well to complement the molding..

Thanks suplex,
I hate to do it but I have no faith in parking next to another vehicle. Has anyone tried these? http://www.sportwing.com/chevrolet-c...e-molding.aspx |

No problem jeremy3721,
I figured if you want to get door moldings, they would probably be the right ones.

They don't stay on the car, they're just used when parking, who cares what the car looks like in the mall parking lot.

I saw a pretty low profile door molding once, thinner than what was posted above, but can't remember where it was from. I'll research...

If paint is dirty and apply the magnets and when removing, i see plenty of scratches coming.

When I was but a wee lad, my mother put thick, clear plastic covers on all of the furniture. This was to protect it. It looked horrible, was not comfortable in the least, and, did I mention that it looked horrible? But, hey, at least we knew that there was a clean couch under there.
I sort of took that experience in developing my own philosophy: If the protection is worse that the possible damage, then it's a waste of effort. So, I have learned to accept that most things can be cleaned, repaired, or replaced... Not saying that molding is a bad idea, but just offering a little food for thought. I'd never fault you for installing molding, but keep in mind that it may not look right, and, your doors can STILL get dinged and scratched and bumped and keyed. Park away from mere mortal "cars," don't piss anybody off, and school your passengers on how to open the damn door... not with a shove of their shoulder while the fire hydrant next the car is the door stop. And please don't get any of the molding from Home Depot's building material section... the half rounds of 3/4" pine are going to look awful, even when painted! |

Oh, yeah, magnets WILL eventually buff a mark into the paint... between shading them from the same sun/ exposure that the rest of the car gets, the subatomic dust particles caught underneath, and the ever- so- slight movement of magnets, they will leave a "footprint" one way or another, over time.
