First Oil Change

Just wondering what's the consensus on how many miles for first oil change. A friend brought up the factory oil may have special break in ingredients that take a certain number of miles to break in. What do you all think? bTW, I changed my SS oil at 500 miles...

I always change my oil when the computer tells me to. That is why there is a 5 yr. 100,000 mile drivetrain warranty. If something goes wrong then GM will fix it.

Many people will change their oil early the first time, then go to their usual scheduled oil changes at 3k/5k or when the DIC tells them to. Everybody has their own schedule.

Doing the first change at 500-1000 miles isn't a bad idea and can't hurt.

I think your friend is mistaken about the break-in additive. I usually change around 1000 miles and probably will change at 20% remaining life on the DIC thereafter. Anything more is just wasting money especially with a synthetic oil.

So, does it come with synthetic from the fctory or do we wait till we reach a certain mileage before going full synthetic?

On my other two I did it at 1000 miles then at every 5K after that ... The first is a freebe from the dealer.

Have seen many change the oil early the first time, within the first 500 or so miles, some just go until the car info system suggests it. Talk to your dealer, they can always help you with service info

Haha did my first oil change on my camaro last night....Still getting used to the new location of the oil filter. Had to make a special trip to get a 24mm socket but it was simple as always. I change my oil between 4k-5k depending on time of the year and if I drove alot of highway or city. But my first oil change I did around 2k miles.

What do you need a 24MM socket for?

Dan,

The large socket is needed to remove the oil filter housing cap as the V6 models only have a paper cartridge element to replace.
The oil filter housing is located on the left top side of the motor.

Interesting. Thanks, I did not know that. I am stuck in the 4th gen Camaro and C5 Corvette era!

VChula, now there's a name I remember!
