I was just thinking about mpg's
This isn't what you think.
I know some of you don't care, and I think it's safe to say it's not anyones top priority if they are looking at the Camaro and especially the SS. BUT I was just thinking about the recent GTO's, which under the old EPA system were rated 29 mpg's highway. (Dragging my own post off on a tangent, I really liked the old highway mpg better, if you mixed steady highway cruising with slower driving you could simply factor in the city a bit more and have an idea of what your personal mpg would be, but now their's no real highway numbers, which annoys me for several reasons) A few numbers: 2006 GTO (MT) LS2 Engine Curb Weight - 3750 lbs Differential 3.46 6th Gear 0.57 Drag Coefficient 0.31 2010 Camaro SS (AT) L99 Engine Curb Weight - 3913 lbs Differential 3.27 6th Gear 0.67 Drag Coefficient 0.35 2010 Camaro SS (MT) LS3 Engine Curb Weight - 3860 lbs Differential - 3.45 6th Gear 0.57 Drag Coefficient 0.35 Relatively speaking the new Camaro did gain 110-160 lbs and lose .03 on the drag coefficient. But even together I'd guestimate that's at most a 2mpg drop, but taking into account the taller gearing on the manual and the AFM on the auto it seems to me the SS should be capable of something in the 29-30 range on highway cruising, which is some range on a 19 gallon tank. Obviously this won't be happening on a normal drive, and especially not driving around someplace like Chicago but if you like the occasional road trip like myself it's nice to have the option. That's basically getting from Oklahoma City to Pittsburgh on two tanks of gas, or LA to NYC on just over five tanks. Kinda cool IMO, not as cool as 12.x quarter miles but what is except an even faster 1/4? |

Well for the most case you should be able to beat the new EPA ratings. I do all the time with my HHR, but it is really close on my Sky.. it could be because I drive the Sky more agressively than the HHR, but that shouldn't matter on cruise on the highway.

The 2004 GTO with the LS1 was 18/28 with the 6 speed and I have never seen either number in the years I have owned it. City is more like 14/15 and hwy is 24/25.

Dang I had no idea the LS2 jump was worse on mpg's so I didn't check that one, bad assumption on my part! I just remembered when I first looked at the GTO it was 29 mpg, (which is what the EPA shows as their old number on the LS1 2004's, if you check the website). Not quite as good as I thought, it'll be interesting to find out what it can do. I'm especially curious about the AFM as I've heard so many mixed stories on the gains of similiar systems. Just a few more months to go!
