Camaro SS vs 6.4 HEMI

So, I suppose its only a matter of time now that Dodge will step up their game as well, and, according to the latest rumors, the new 6.4 HEMI will put out 480 HP and 460 LB/FT. I think its safe to say that for now the SS is decidedly quiker than any of the SRT8 models, but perhaps this new engine will effectively tie with the Camaro, if not best it given the power bump and ZF 8-speed.

BTW, I have to say I like the way Dodge is still upping displacement, whereas everyone else is downsizing. The new transmission sounds like a nice upgrade too. (I hear GM is working on a 9 speed though)

So, what do you think? SS vs the new wave of SRT8's

Stock for Stock with average drivers
L99 SS vs. 6.4L SRT8= Death for the L99, not even close to fair

LS3 SS vs. 6.4L SRT8=Tied up, dead even

The only reason why I say this with the LS3 vs 392 fight

The SRT8 is may pick up about 10-15 pounds with a new transmission, and the parasitic loss will likely be lower due to a modern automatic (and not the ancient Mercedes 5 speed auto) transmission. The 6.4(392) that is going in is going to be lighter than the 6.1L going out, at at worst, the same weight. However, the change from hydrolic to electric steering will reduce weight.

Thus the SRT8 will pick up only a few pounds (if any) in exchange for 55 HP and 40 tq. The Camaro is picking up a few pounds too in 2011 and isnt getting better gearing or power.

Once we throw mods on? bets are off.

It should close the gap for the Dodge guys out there.480 HP should make up for the weight disadvantage the Dodge has. However,If we like it or dont like it,We are going to see all our ponycars going to smaller powerplants in the near future.I look for the new Chevy small block to be in the next gen Camaro,so if you want that big cube motor,Well then I suggest you buy it while you can.Its just a sign of the times.Technology advances and we are able to get more out of less. That not really a bad thing.Think about it,How many Big Block motors do you see coming out of detroit these days. That was the way to go in the late 60's.Those days are long gone.I just hope we dont get to the point where we are putting V-6's in our Camaro's.

It is big displacement, BUT..it is also getting 18 city and 24/25 highway by using MDS/DOD so it may escape the gas guzzler tax.

I can't wait to HEAR the new 6.4L HEMI. I love the sound of the 5.7 in the R/T, hope this is even better!

I was thinking about it last night, going by numbers at the crank, the Challenger will be producing more HP per lb of car than the SS and possibly the GT (difficult to say as 412HP seems conservative for the new 5.0). That is, if one subscribes to this HP/lb comparison. Unless suspension and traction prove to be a problem, it seems the 2011 Challenger should be faster than the SS on paper.

I can see the first MotorTrend video review of the 2011 cars - Challenger better straight line performance vs GT (*with stock gears) and SS. GT better handling/skid pad numbers than both. SS will get rated below the Genesis Coupe which wasn't even on the track that day

Yes thats true.I believe within the next 5 years or so we will be seeing smaller V-8's in our ponycars.Smaller but more effective.I also look for the cars themselves to be slightly smaller.Noting too drastic maybe about 5-10% smaller. So lets enjoy these big cube motors while they are still out there.I love the fact that all 3 cars are putting out unbelivable performance for a pretty good price.Even though the SRT-8 is a little pricey compared to the Mustang and Camaro. Its a great time to be alive.

The way I see it, the Z28 should compensate for any of the SS's shortcomings against the GT500, SRT8's, AMG's and M's. It should be outrageously fast. The fastest of those cars gets to 60 in something like 3.9 secs.

Agreed, but then again the SS is not intended to compete with those cars.A more fair compairison would be the SS vs the 5.0 mustang. The Gt500 is in a different class and the SRT-8 is 8-10 thousand more,so its shouldnt really be compared to the SS.Even though the SS should outperform the current SRT-8.The big weight disadvantage for the Dodge doesnt really do it any favors.Im sure thats a big reason why Dodge upped the power to compete bettter with the Camaro and Mustang.

Oh god not another one of these threads.

Lets compare stuff that's not even out yet and be proven completely wrong.

I wouldn't be surprised if the new 6.4L performed worse than the 6.1L. And I bet it's going to cost like $55k+

Just equating power to weight ratios of a 5th gen SS and 6.4 Hemi Challenger, the Challenger needs 4150lbs/3850lbs * 426 BHP = 459 BHP to "break even" with the SS. So, 480 BHP should be enough to slowly walk from an SS away IF it's drag is not terribly higher than the SS.

I've read the new 6.4L SRT8s will be getting an 8 speed automatic.
