here's a start:
His writing of "Common Sense" was so influential in spurring on the Revolutionary War that John Adams reportedly said, "Without the pen of the author of 'Common Sense,' the sword of Washington would have been raised in vain" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Paine |

Thomas Paine's Common Sense helped make the American Revolution a reality. The historians generally agree that about 1/3 of America supported Independence from England, 1/3 wanted to stay with England, 1/3 didn't care. Thomas Paine made the connection between Independence and Righteousness and Religion that sealed the deal for many in early America. He was a well know orator in England and was "recruited" by T Jefferson or B Franklin(Forget right now) to come to America and wake up the people with his witty and persuasive writing and arguments. His arguments ring true today as they did back then. This pamphlet was widely distributed throughout early America and was the most popular reading of it's time. There are so many things that stand out in this Pamphlet but off the top of my head i love when he says "The hemp is ripe to rankness" That part really cracks me up.
I hope this helped. I took a ton of American formative Period classes in college just for the heck of it. |

Another great topic for study is Benedict Arnold. His pre villain record with the American revolution is stunning. That man was ordered to march to modern day Canada with a rag tag group of Revolutionaries and cut down trees to build a Navy to fend off the British Navy! He did it and was critical in America's winning Independence but he ran into trouble for profiteering on war torn Americans. Sugar and Coffee were in short supply because of the war and his military connections had him a corner on the market and he exploited it to the max.
He was reprimanded by General Washington for exploitation. He got mad and tried to leave the door open to West Point for the British and will forever be remembered a traitor and nothing else. |
