I know you meant it jokingly, but pornography is a real issue with a lot of guys, the lure is just too strong for some to break by themselves. Porn to some is like cigarettes or food to others, I hope he gets help in fighting this addiction.

well people like that need to try and control it until they get home or bring a laptop and use the WiFi provided your company has it or go to the Starbuck's bathroom

I cant say that feel sorry for him. If you do something stupid, what ever happens is your fault. You can say that some people are addicted to porn but the differance is that there is no chemical dependance to keep you hooked. It is a habit that can be broken if the person wants to. Like gambling. You think you need it, that you need to keep going but its all done out of your own free choice. Smoking on the otherhand is hard to stop because you feel like crap when you try and stop, and need that cigarette to feel normal. If anyone doesn't have enough will power to only look at that stuff in the privacy of their home, think of it this way: do you think they could prevent themselves from bringing in strippers or prostitutes into work? If they cant then I will accept that they are addicted to it. Otherwise, they are just stupid.

What? You don't have to be chemically dependent to be hooked onto something. Some people bite their nails or fiddle with their hair or eat their boogers (ewe) well, there may be a chemical in those boogers... Some folks are work-a-holics or are compulsive etc... Pornography is a type of psychological dependency. This sort of thing occupies their thoughts and they feel a psychological as well as physical "need" to gratify themselves with something that ultimately never satisfies.

In some cases it's taken to the extreme as Ted Bundy has shown. Before Mr. Bundy began killing, he admitted to first finding and looking at pornography when he was younger. He stated that, while pornography didn't cause him to commit murder, the consumption of violent pornography helped "shape and mold" his violence into "behavior too terrible to describe".

Let's call this person... Bob. Knowing it's against company policy and that Betty, the receptionist, may not be "down" with the idea; Bob decides against placing an order for an in office "lap dance" with the local escort service. So what's that prove? If someone's checkin' out porn online, they most likely would prefer to not make their activities known to the rest of the office.

Addicts are not stupid.

i agree with both points, but if you're an addict to porn in my personal opinion you shouldnt be working near a pc! i'm a average joe, i have a pc at work but even though we have internet access i dont touch it, i'm getting paid to do my job and my job only. but thats my personal perspective.

Much of that is the point that I was attempting to make, you simply put it in a much more pleasant turn of phrase. I am sorry for the tone that I had. Just because someone does something apealing with great frequency does not make that an addiction. If you have enough control over it to allow yourself to be discreet, then it is not an addiction. That goes for people who look at pronography as much as it does for those who pick their nose. And those who get caught are going about things in an unintelligent manner. My analogy of the call girl in the office was extreme, but it does show my point. The thing that prevents Bob from watching a live girl strip in his office is because he knows he will get caught when the secratary sees her walk in. But watching a webcam girl strip on his computer is almost the same (not quite as bad though) but the chances of getting caught are significantly lower. And to say that he has an addiction to internet porn but not the real thing is akin to saying that an alcoholic is addicted only to Miller but not Coors. Addictions are very serious and addicts need help. Those who look at porn while at work just need manners.

As far psychological addictions go, I will admit that some people do have a gambling addiction, they can and will bet on anything. But I will not put people who look at porn into that category, at least not until I am convinced that it is beyond their control. Doing it because you can get away with it is not the same as being compelled to do it, such as in the case of gambling (which I brought up in my earlier post, possibly the worst example I could have picked). I am not saying that these people don't have a problem, because they do have one. Its just that their problem is mostly their attitude rather than a legitimat addiction.

See I think that's where you're confused. They're not playing a game of truth or dare at the office just to see if they can get away with it. They are being "compelled" because they're always thinking about sex or nude women. It's not because they want to think about it, rather it brings them to a place of temporary satisfaction-- self gratification. Once satisfied, they'll log off the adult website and carry on with their life. It's "lust" in simple terms. They can't walk down the street without visually raping every attractive female they encounter. One's never enough.

Gambling is similar. Gamblers always assume that the next roll of the dice or pull of the handle will be the big payoff. It's replayed over and over in their mind and they believe it. But why do they do it? Certainly not because they can get away with it, otherwise they would have stopped long before they lost their house, wife and car. They're hooked- no chemicals needed.

You are presenting a contradiction with the words that I have highlighted. If one is never enough then they cannot log off and continue their life. They will need to stay on, and continue looking, maintaining the satisfaction that they get from it. this will continue until there is something that prevents that. This is the pattern that all addicts exhibit. Be it alcohol, heroine, gambling, smoking, and so on. The high needs to me maintained. When their stimulus is removed from their system they enter with-drawl with their body and mind undergoing high levels of stress, beginning with irritability and anxiousness with extreme cases eventually rendering the person useless as a functioning human being (hard drugs) until they are recovered. I am still not convinced that this is what happens people who look at porn while at work. They have a problem yes, but not an addiction.

I'm not confused at all, they do it mostly because they believe nobody will ever know. Its more similar to people that go to internet forums at work (like this one), or play online games, or check their personal e-mail while at work, rather than gambling. It continues because of the false belief that past success is a trend towards future success and not merely good luck. This is opposite to the problem that compulsive gamblers have which you described, that their string of bad luck is going to change, they just need 1 more chance. This is what helps to identify gambling as an addiction. That and the fact that they will bet on anything, signifying that they cannot stop.
