Steel wool in the muffler?

Hello All,
Did a search and found nothing so newbie here with his first post. I was showing my son the dual mode exhaust on the ZL1 this evening and noticed what looked like hair coming out of the driver's side inboard exhaust pipe. After grabbing a flashlight, I saw what looked to be steel wool packed into it down by the muffler that was somewhat separating. I inspected the passenger side and saw the same thing, although, not separating like on the driver's side. Is this normal? Did Chevy put essentially 'glass packs' on the ZL1?

Thanks,
Marty

Depends on how OCD you are? I know some owners have had their exhausts replaced because of it. I have never had that issue and if I did I would just let it burn out.

I believe I heard of this on other gm vehicles so I would say it is very possible that this is the same on the ZL1

I've ran into this problem as well, I've been on my dealer a** to replace the exhaust system. I hate hearing the noise that it makes as I cruise down the street. A totally clean and shining ZL1 making noise down the street smh

I really wonder why you all are torturing yourselves. It will all burn out eventually anyway. I guess none of you have ridden street bikes with exhausts? The same thing happens to them. Loud pipes save lives. Must be a certain production run?

Ditto
It happened to mine as well. I pulled it out and it never recurred. No alteration in my sound.

it would seem that different amounts of packing come out of the mufflers. mine had a sh*t ton, so much i could here the baffles vibrating. the more that comes out the more it alters your sound. i probably would've left mine too if the baffles weren't making so much noise. when i pay a payment on the car that equals some peoples house payment i don't want to hear baffles vibrating like a car that's 20 years old.

Update: Took it to the dealership on Wednesday and a new exhaust is on it's way. Originally they said it would be ready today but called yesterday and said it had to come from California and would take 8-10 days which I thought was odd.
