INTAKE MANIFOLD COVER REMOVE FOR PERFORMANCE

I was wondering if anyone new the purpose for the two intake manifold covers, and fabric liner on bottom side of the hood other the cosmetic apperance.

Do you think it is to keep the heat in for winter or sound deadning?

1. black and silver or painted to match piece on top w/ fabric on bottom side. 5 lbs

2. black piece the follows the contour of intake underneath the top one.

The fake intake cover ie.. clamshell is to keep you from hearing the valvetrain that is very noisy that everyone complains about on the older ls motors. the engine cover is mostly for appearance.

I can clearly notice the increased noise from the motor with the cover off.

I ran mine with the cover off for a short while , then decided the cover was there to insulate the intake from engine compartment heat so I reinstalled it .

And the hood liner is there mostly for noise reduction into the cabin.

The covers are there for sound deadening. The intake cover does not protect the intake from heat, it would retain heat. It muffles the injectors pulses and valve train noises.

The reason car weights as much as it does is because of the added sound deadener, insulation etc. Its amazing how that stuff all adds up.

My friends shop saw a huge timing full with the big cover on the engine from heat soak.

Yes, it is! As long as you don't mind a little added noise.

Those 2 covers are completely useless and YES, they do rob power due to heat soak. Take them off. I removed them on all L92/LS3 powered cars.

Hey, those are my intake covers laying on my driveway.

I took them both off a while back (and took a pic) at the advice of my tuner.

The intake cover (small cover) has insulating foam that definately acts like a blanket.
The day we took the engine cover off my car (hot engine after driving 100 miles in 90 degree heat) a big rush of hot air came out from under it.

But as far as increasing HP (I dought it). But I do believe the engine will cool down faster with the covers off (especially at the track with the hood open).
