Question Where were you when Martin Luther King Jr was shot? .

Most of us recall small details of our lives when they coïncide with significant historical events. All of us old enough to have memories of those "hella trips" can tell others about just where we were and what we were doin' at that moment.

I ask you: What do YOU remember about the day and time when Martin Luther King Jr. was so foully murdered in Memphis?

I'll start. I was in Berkeley, CA taking part in my eighth grade English class' special presentation for a public audience of perhaps 250 people, mostly parents and friends, of a skillful mélange of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet and the West Side Story that a team of teachers at Willard Junior High School had written and choreographed. Now that I look back on it as a teacher myself, that was a hella feat; I should do so well...

During the last act, one of our teachers stopped the performance to announce the tragic news of Martin Luther King's death. Everyone went silent, we were all stunned. The teacher asked us all to delve into our thoughts and find what we needed to continue our lives and, by extension, our play. We finished it with a panache we never had before. Everyone cried; everyone hugged each other. I'll never forget.

I wasn't even a gleam in my father's eyes yet. But, his life and death has had a profound impact on this great nation. All together...AMEN!

I was 5-1/2 years old at the time, and I don't remember knowing about it until years later...just something my parents would not have discussed around children...the violence part of it, not the racial part...though it's possible that might have also played a part. Times were different then...
