6'3" wearing a Helmet in a zl1 at the track.
6'3" wearing a Helmet in a zl1 at the track.
I was at the track today in my 2014 RT challenger Classic. I climbed into my mates 2014 zl1, and at 6'3" I had half inch clearance to roof. Then with the helmet on I had to rake the seat incline back a long way, in a driving position I did not like, just to get in with a helmet on. It was fairly terrible. I have been looking forward to possible getting a 2016 ss or z** package, for their track prowess but now I'm concerned about the height thing for helmets on the track. In the r/t I can sit bolt upright with helmet on and still have 1-2 inch clearance. Does anyone know if the 2016 model have addressed this issue and given more clearance for tall people? |

the 2016 car losses head space. Being 6'5" I know I will have to rake back the seat a bit to fit.
I could not fit in a ZL1 with a sunroof without hitting my head, let alone wearing a helmet.

Drat that's not what I wanted to hear. Thanks for the info tho.
This zl1 did have a sunroof and recaro seats. But it's obviously an issue. |

Lose the sunroof and you should gain an inch or so. I have simply looked at the head/helmet/headliner contact as another way to hold me in the seat. I literally will press my head more upright so the helmet is firmly pushed against the headliner. Not much difference on a track but very helpful in the sharper more numerous changes of direction in an autox situation.

I'm 6'7" tall and took my helmet to the dealer when I went to look at a 2016 2SS with no sunroof. He thought I was crazy
Anyway, I fit with the helmet on, with room to spare! Now, I found I was most comfortable with and without the helmet with the seat fully reclined, but the recline is pretty limited in the gen 6. Regardless, I have to disagree that the 2016 looses head space. From my experience, it's a definite improvement over the gen 5. To fit in the gen 5 (again, no sunroof), I had to sit with the seat reclined significantly father than I would have liked, and my helmet was still pressed into the roof liner. It probably would have been pretty hard on my neck on a bumpy track, and I think would likely lead to injury. Nigel |

This is why I made sure when I sold my V6 and got the ZL1 that it didn't have a sunroof. ....

The sunroof is a big part of the issue on 5th gen. The 6th gen seats are supposed to be recessed a little more downwards, but the car also lost dimensions. Take helmet and go sit in one.

I thought the 16s got a little more head space than the Gen 5s because GM lowered the seating position closer to the floor board. Or was GM just B/Sing us? I haven't gotten to sit in one yet and I don't know what's going on around here in Central Louisiana because I've heard south Louisiana as some.

However, having been in both, like I already said, this is definitely not the case, and Motor Trend published a headroom spec that was greater than the gen 5. |

I suppose the other option is to go with a convertible . GM have down that on a ZL1 before.then you have infinite headroom. I would have to get a roll cage to comply for track days here. Has anybody tracked a ZL1 covertible with roll bars. Any thought/opinions?
I haven't really wanted a covertible before, rather go with the stiffness of the coupe, although even if it rains you will probably have more room with convertible cover? |
