Metal against metal noise when backing up? Anyone else?

Almost daily my Camaro makes a loud metal to metal banging noise when backing up. It happens when I either back up in reverse or back up in neutral down hill. People in my car have heard it, and it is so strong I feel the vibration in the floor and pedals. The loud noise is followed by a zipper like noise. I have taken the car to the dealership 3 times, and they have yet to duplicate the sound. It cannot be normal and am scared that something can be severely getting damaged.

Has anyone else experienced anything similar to this?

Funny you should say that, I have been hearing it to same backing up mostly when applying the brake, and no it not the brakes 100% I work on cars and the difference and seems like its coming from front mid section

I also would like to know what this is

I have a steep hill down my driveway and into my garage. I keep my daily driver parked perpendicular to my garage so I find it's easier to back down the hill and then turn the camaro into the garage rather than make a 15 point turn to line it up. I heard the exact same thing but I thought it was because I was holding the clutch down while rolling down the hill. Last time it happened I thought maybe it was the right front brake locking up and the ABS kicking in?

Mine did that every once in a while. Took to dealer, there was an software update for the ABS/ST system. Once they applied that update, I have not had that issue once.

DallasMaroLover, have you tried taking a tech along with you to see if you can replicate the issue while they're in the car with you?

Believe it or not, I have already. 3 times!!! When we drove it around, parked, went frontwards and reverse, and she wouldn't do it for them. Its frustrating!!

I hear you. Definitely not the brakes. Its is in the front to mid section, and strong enough to feel the vibration. I hope I can get it resolved soon. I'll let you know!

While not related I had a problem with my drivers side window having a mind of its own once... Dealer couldn't duplicate, I left ti started up again... so I broke out the crackberry and video'd it, took to dealer, they said good enough for us, and they fixed problem.

I've had the same issue on several occasions while backing up and the front wheels either straight ahead or slightly turned. Scares the crap out of you when it happens.

I too have the same issue but it's not very often. However every time it has happen I was backing out of the driveway turning slightly with brakes applied. It sounds the ABS kicks on becasue I also feel it in the brake pedal and as soon as I let of the brake it stops.

same thing has happened to me... sounds awfull when it happens (metal on metal grinding). Then it doesn't happen for a couple months, so I don't worry about it.

I also have a slight hill to my drive way and I have experienced the same thing many times. Dealer thinks I am nuts! I would love to know what the hell it is because as stated before, it scares the crap out of ya! lol I am going to look into the ABS update for sure! Thanks for posting!
