I'm asking because the ZL1 seems like a more affordable and street friendly alternative to a 9" and people are making seem like it a whole project to install.

I can't say its fun doing this kind of thing on jack stands but its not difficult. Just somewhat back breaking and time consuming. Depends on what you define as a "whole project" and your skill level.

These gen5 camaros have to be some of the easiest cars I have worked on. Doing a rear swap as long as you have the right tools should about 2 - 3 hours to R&R everything using jack stands while taking your time doing that project. I can't wait to see the pricing on the ZL1 differential swap kit.

"whole project", meaning I've been reading rumors that the Zl1 rear diff won't fir into the cradle of the SS. Is that a true statement or is just a simple swap out?

You actually believe something you found on the internet There is a lot of stuff that floats around and it simply isn't true. GM is seling the ZL1 upgrade as a BOLT in Kit.

I'd guess more. The ZL1 diff by itself has a retail list price of about $2500, D/S about $700, axles about $600 ea, nuts/bolts about $100.... That ZL1 stuff is pricey, compared to SS driveline parts. $4K ish would be my retail guess, hopefully though a lot less, and discounted by some dealers. Then you have tuning for the speedo error...

Hey, remember the commercial. You can't put anything on the internet that isn't true.

The ZL1 cradle has the tabs for the cooling lines for the diff cooler. As far as I know thats the only difference. And it aint hard to make something work for that if people even plan on adding the cooler which it seems like most aren't.
And who pays retail? |

You can't pay retail. Takes the fun out of bargaining.
