Methanol Fuel Cell options / Methanol on E85 and more...

Hi dudes!

I'm running an Alky Control Methanol system on my Twin Turbo ZL1 and the kit was originally installed when the car had the factory blower on it.

So two questions...

1) What methanol fuel cell are you guys running? I have the ProMeth tank (the one that goes in the left corner of the trunk. It has been ok, but it just isn't a road race ready or very durable unit. It is injection molded and held down by two bolts and prone to cracking and lots of sloshing. Who has a JAZ or something else?

2) Who is running Methanol on top of E85? For the experts out there, if my car was always going to be running E85 should I think about off-loading my Methanol kit? Obviously, a retune is in order if I went this route. My motor is fully built...should I be able to make the exact same power? My car has never been dyno'd or run as a Twin Turbo car without Methanol.

Seeking INFORMED opinions.

1) I've used and will still use the 4 gallon tank Julio sells. I had to fashion an aluminum strap to hold it in place. I've had no issues with it. I can't remember the brand name but it was one i'd heard of.

My install (trunkwise) is just like this one, tank and all with the exception of I mounted my meth pump at the rear of the battery well.

2) I'll be running meth with E85 but still not put together yet. Not sure if mine will be tuned to take any advantage of any additional cooling (if any exists) but more likely just there for a little bit of safety in keeping the IATs down. Guys on yellowbullet see gains with E85 and 100% meth. Besides, it is already in place.

3) If you haven't, look up injecting meth pre-turbos... I just opened a can of worms.

I run both. Every 1000+hp LS I know runs both.

Yeah, it is like a safety blanket. Just a bit of a PITA to fill and every 12 - 14 months rebuild the pump. I guess @ this power level I shouldn't complain.

Keep the meth. E85 runs cooler (in the engine and the IVT) - it does nothing for IAT which can pull timing when in higher boost.

Never considered it a pain to fill. Top off tank every oil change, no big deal. Beyond simple and easy.

I ran my first pump for ~4 years. Swapped it out with no issues.

Well gents, my tuner said I didn't need both so I converted my AIS meth tank to a supercharger chiller and got rid of the POS cooler that came with the Maggie. Now I circulate a higher flow of water through the supercharger during normal use and when I go to the track I pack the tank with ice then drain it back down when I am finished with the run.

AIS is now ProMeth and it seems like everyone is running that tank, including me.

Unreal, it seems like you are always on the good side of the Bell curve on things. My Alky control pump started leaking at 14 months and RedlineViper had the same experience. Julio @ Alky control said every 12-16 months, pumps need a rebuild.

Thanks for the input guys!

Good to know. I have had mine for almost 3 years and no leak yet and has recently been relocated to the trunk near the battery. I am using a custom setup with a generic 2.5 gallon tank and LED light above to see into the tank at night.

I know what he says, just saying I never had issues, and only did it "just because". Old one still sitting in garage and I need to mail it back.

At least rebuilds are cheap/easy/quick.

Totally understand!

When I talked with ProMeth they recommended using mini-whiffle balls inside the tank (because methanol won't melt them) to stop slosh when road racing etc.

Have you seen a better solution?

Never used anything but washer tank that has none of those issues. Its super tall/long with pickup at bottom.

If you are going to keep the meth injection then you should get a spare meth pump to swap out every year so the one that was in use can get serviced by Julio. I happen to have an Alky Control pump I am not using that I would sell.
