Yup I agree, post up some pics if you get a chance. I'm curious to see your your tensioner is too.

not sure but have seen alot of sensor failures in different engine brands in my line of work.
but if a L99 oil pump failure is rare, my thought is to verify before doing a teardown and then find out it was a $30 sensor or whatever they cost.

The LsX sending unit fails a lot but more due to installers hurting them when removing the intake manifold, it's just weak like that. Lol

A faulty sending unit does not make your valve train go clitty clack. lol

I'm curious as well. When I did the cam at around 27,000 miles the tensioner was in excellent shape, that's one reason why I left it in. I have quite a bit of experience with chains, tensioners and dampners and have found that in general, tensioners do more than restrict chain movement but also promote less chain wear/stretching, promote better "chain wrap" on the gears wich reduce wear on the sprockets as well, helps with more accurate timing both mechanicaly and electrically. Once I see it I will decide if I'll put another tensioner in or go with the dampner, one way or another it will be changed as well as the stock chain as they now have almost 70,000 very agressive miles on them.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news....this happened to me at about 11k miles. The stock oil pumps are shoddy. The piece that has the spring with the check valve gets stuck, and cavitates into the bore. The result is that it sticks or binds in place...sometimes with catastrophic results. Happened to me while parked. Thank God I could shut it off immediately. Result, I got an upgraded pump and cam swap.

Had a chance to tear into it a bit. I haven't removed the pump yet, going to get it on a lift in a day or two, but removed the front cover. Nothing seems out of the ordinary in the pump. Gears look good, no scorring or galling, nothing more than expected wear for this kind of mileage. The tensioner also appears to be in very good shape, I'll know better when I take it out but I see very little wear, in fact, from what I can see I'm a bit surprised considering their track record. I'm thinking now it's most likely the releif valve being stuck same as withe the LS3 pumps.

Here are a few shots before disassembly.

Damn! Thanks for the pics. Are those swirl marks on the rotor and inside the cover normal?

Everything looks normal that I can see. The pump/cover have never been removed before this, everything is as assembled from the factory. The marks on the face of the rotor and cover are more discolorations than wear. The gears do rub against the cover, the clearence between them controls the end play.

Does anyone know off hand if the timing chain for the LS3 conversion is the same replacement chain for L99's that utilize VVT
