ZL1 test with Z/28 parts
This was interesting but very short on detail on a subject we've all kicked around for a bit. Personally I'd have loved to see the comparison numbers between the two.

My question is how much faster was ZL1 with Z/28 305's all around compared to the stock setup & tires. Forget the Z/28
The article doesn't surprise me being that the Z/28 is a very stripped down no frills light race car setup. ZL1 has all the creature comforts & that comes with heavier weight to power etc. I'll stick with my ZL1 any day or a 2015 Zo6 Vette :-)

He gave the correct corporate answer. Not too sure about the "re-balance the car"? He never did say how much slower did he?

No, no discussion regarding tire pressures, mode, camber, caster, or actual times. Inquiring minds want to know.

I'm happy with my ZL1. If I was rich I'd buy a Z/28 too just because I think a factory 427 Camaro is just plain cool.

I'd be curious if track pads and tire compound comparable to the Z/28 doesn't get you equal or better lap times. The balance could be kept with the same tire widths front and rear.
It would be interesting if the ZL1 cranked out comparable lap times because the only aggravation would be the noise of the track pads during normal driving. |

"Stielow explained why the super ZL1 was still slower than the less-powerful Z/28, stating that “you need to rebalance the chassis to take advantage of the tires.” So for all you ZL1 owners out there getting ideas… you might want to look beyond a tire swap." Interesting........ I would also like to know the actual time difference between the two after the tire swap was made. Not taking away from his opinion but would rather see the results myself and form my own opinion.

If here were to say the ZL1 was equal, much closer or better then Z/28 sales would/could drop.
End of the day the man is part of the company that sells the cars, his job is designing cars to be sold, say something considered "dumb" by management and you put sales at risk. |

Don't the carbon brake discs have a lot more stopping power of our zl1 rotors. Also the 505hp rating was proven to be an under estimate when they used it in the vet. Combine all that with better aero dynamics, lighter weight and better stopping power, it's no wonder the z28 is faster. I'd say the front tires is a small part of the equation but also important to the total balance of the 28 package. Just my 2cents

I do not doubt his opinion and on paper it makes sense that the Z/28 is quicker around a track. But, enquiring minds want to know how much quicker and if I had to guess it would be that the ZL vs. the Z/28 would look similar to the ZL vs the GT500 and would have the ZL take the lead on the first lap but steadily lose ground as the laps continue and ending with the Z/28 being ahead by the end of the race.
But, wouldn't that make a video we would all very much like to watch. And, where is this ZL test mule hybrid they speak of?

Don't forget that the Z/28 has 19" wheels and has a lower center of gravity as a result giving it better cornering.
The rear end is a different type that also allowed them to shave more lap time off. |

I really think this is a moot point. At the end of the day they are two cars with entirely different focus. It really doesn't matter. The point is the ZL1 does not come with 305 Trofeos or CC brakes or Multimatics. It shouldn't be faster on a road course. I'm ok with that. I love the new Z/28. I can afford one. I really don't want one. For those that do, I think it's a great value. These threads will continue to go on forever, just like the V6 vs SS, 1LE vs ZL1 discussion. None of it matters. There is a food chain ANC the new Z/28 is at the top.
Wait until the Gen 6 platform. We will be having these same discussions again. Those cars will be faster and make these 5th gens look like over weight dinosaurs |

I just want to know how much faster, if any, the ZL1 was from itself on stock GY's.
