Oil temp advice

How accurate is the digital oil temp gauge displayed on our Z28 dashboards?
I run as high as 295 on the road track and it gets me nervous!
I'm running Mobil 1 15w-50 as per the track specs.
It's still pretty clear looking
I just need to know I'm not damaging car
Thx
Rob

295 is within specs...I wouldn't worry as the temps go down quickly after the track session. In my ZL1, the oil temps would frequently get to 310-320 at the end of a session.

Mine too, and that's why I got rid of it!
Now my Z28 is in the 285-295 range and everyone at the track is like, wow...that's hot!
Inside I'm thinking Crap! I sold my less expensive, and faster ZL1 for a NA Z28 and I still have hot oil!
It's does come down within minutes of exiting the track, so I felt that was good!

The answer is not very. The gen 5 Camaro uses inputs from several sensors to estimate the oil temperature. There are quite a few threads on it.

You need an oil cooler if you run an LS7 on a road course regardless of the vehicle.

It doesn't hurt to install track bars where the bumper bars used to be either. More air flow and about 40 pounds less weight.

I too and hitting 300 degrees on my oil temps and about 245 on coolant. Most recently at Homestead Miami speedway, I got the warning on the dash that showed turn off a/c for engine temp. The a/c was already off.

Justice, what oil temps are you getting with your aftermarket cooler?

Interested in your oil cooler set up... Is it a kit and what temps are you experiencing on road coarse?

With a built LS7 style motor measuring temperature with a stand alone sensor running in 95 degree plus temperatures at Charlotte and COTA with the track temperatures in excess of 120 degrees we saw peak oil temperatures of 210 degrees.

These have all been custom installations, but I see no reason we couldn't package this as a kit. We use http://www.bmrs.net/ (Brown and Miller) -12 crimped on fittings and lines. They are not cheap , but they do not leak.

LOL, this is funny. I have a similar thread going in the ZL1 forums.

Must be the hot summer months.

JP, I would be interested in this oil cooler kit if you get one made up. I think it's a good idea to add some additional cooling while at the track.

These are the main components to the oil cooler kit.

Convoluted PTFE Hose http://www.bmrs.net/PTFE_hose_01.html
Crimped on Race Quality Fittings http://www.bmrs.net/AC-crimped_fittings_01.html
Massive Fluidynne Cooler https://www.summitracing.com/parts/f...0618/overview/
Improved Racing Oil Block with or without Thermostat http://www.improvedracing.com/oil-co...12f-p-435.html

We are working out the details for a bolt on bracket as opposed to the custom brackets we have been making. The lines and fittings are the best you can buy to minimize any potential for leaks.

At 290+ oil temps you need to change the oil after the event. The oil may hold up but the additive packages in almost every oil out there is going to start burning off and not leaving you with much protection.

Ideally you would like to see the car to run 200-220 water temps and if you can keep oil temps under 275 your doing great on a hot summer day.

Kudo's to Pete for the BMRS stuff. I don't know of a better line and fitting company on the market today. Not to mention how light their hose and fittings are and the amount they can bend without crimping. We haven't used anything but them for the better part of 10 years now on all of our track builds.

I'm holding off on any more track events until I get this additional oil cooler installed.
