The original list consisted of 30 different cars.

January 30, 2010 - For Immediate Release

The countdown has begun in preparation for the 2010 World Car awards winners' press conference co-hosted by Bridgestone Corporation and BASF SE at the New York International Auto Show on Thursday, April 1, 2010. The 2010 World Car Design of the Year title holder will be announced at this time.

The top three design finalists will be announced at the Geneva International Motor Show on Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010.

The 2010 World Car Design of the Year award is presented by BASF SE who announced their exclusive title sponsorship earlier this year.

Prime Research International, a global leader in strategic communication research and consultancy, has also joined forces with the World Car Awards to form a unique research partnership that will provide strategic reports in 2010, analyzing global automotive media coverage.

The four 2010 World Car Design of the Year finalists represent three continents. They are the Chevrolet Camaro, the Citroen C3 Picasso, the Kia Soul, and the Toyota Prius.

This is the fourth time that a Citroen design has been in the top finalists' position for the World Car Design of the Year Award having won the overall title in 2006 for its C4 design.

Cars eligible for the 2010 World Car Design of the Year award are taken from the list of thirty (30) World Car candidates nominated by fifty-nine (59) World Car jurors from twenty-five (25) countries across the globe.

The World Car Design of the Year category, and the corresponding award, is meant to highlight new vehicles with innovation and style that push established boundaries.

A design panel consisting of five highly respected world design experts asked to first review each candidate, and then establish a short-list of recommendations for the jurors. The design experts are:

Masatsugu Arimoto: as Japan's foremost automotive design commentator, Arimoto is chairman of the Japan Auto Colour Award program, and juror on Japan's governmental "Good Design Award" committee, Car Styling's "Car Design Awards" as well as judge on the Japan Car of the Year awards.

Silvia Baruffaldi
: as Managing Editor of Auto & Design magazine, Silvia Baruffaldi has contacts with design centres of car makers and consultant studios the world over.

Gernot Bracht
: former designer at Renault, well wired, now teaches at Pforzheim design school in Germany.

Sam Livingstone: an Associate Editor of Car Design News and since 2001 has lectured at the Royal College of Art where he is now Senior Tutor in Vehicle Design.

Tom Matano: currently the Executive Director, School of Industrial Design, at Academy of Art University, San Francisco. From 1999 to 2002, Matano worked with Mazda Headquarters in Japan, managing the Chief Designers group that created the entire Mazda car line designs, as well as the European and North American studios.

The fifty-nine (59) World Car Awards jurors will now vote on the expert's recommendations in February 2010 and their ballots will be tabulated by the international accounting firm KPMG. The top three design finalists will be announced at the Geneva International Motor Show on Tuesday, March 2nd during a press conference co-hosted by the New York International Auto Show, BASF SE and Bridgestone Corporation.

Previous winners of the World Car Design of the Year award were the Fiat 500 in 2009, the Audi R8 in 2008, the Audi TT in 2007 and the Citroen C4 in 2006.

Now in their seventh year, the annual World Car awards have become one of the world's most prestigious, credible and significant programs of its kind.

The awards were inaugurated in 2003, and officially launched in January 2004, to reflect the reality of the global marketplace, as well as to recognize and reward automotive excellence on an international scale. The awards are intended to complement, not compete, with existing national and regional Car of the Year programs.

The awards are administered by a non-profit association, under the guidance of a Steering Committee of pre-eminent automotive journalists from Asia, Europe, and North America. Peter Lyon (Japan) and Gerry Malloy (Canada) are the co-chairs; Matt Davis (Italy), John McCormick (USA) and Jens Meiners (Germany) are the directors. There is no affiliation with, nor are the awards in any way influenced by any publication, auto show, automaker, or other commercial enterprise.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: Chevrolet Camaro and Kia Soul should NEVER be uttered in the same breath unless the statement is something like "Today my Chevrolet Camaro ate a Kia Soul!" Camaro all the way!

Isn't the Prius being recalled? If so then how can that make the final four?

The Prius has to be nominated for political correctness. The Camaro definitely is a unique design that isn't like anything else on the road, so it deserves to be on this list.

So it's the Camaro vs three cars that are ugly as sin...seriously I wouldn't even drive any of the other three off a cliff. Push...sure; drive, no. I know what everyone here would pick, but who knows. I realize this isn't solely based on how the car looks, but c'mon man!

Citroen C3 Picasso

Chevy Camaro (as if we all don't have a perfect mental image already)

Kia Soul

Toyota Prius

It's obvious to me that the folks facilitating this award are tree humpers. Sadly the only reason the Camaro was nominated was because of the fuel mileage from the V6. I personally don't care if the Camaro doesn't win this award, it's like winning the least doucheiest award. The Camaro already won the award for best design.... Look at the sales!
