So, is this the first Totalled 2012 on the forum? By the sounds of things that was a pretty bad hit. Glad the OP and his friend are o.k.

Did she run the light? Did you get cited or did she?

The OP pretty much admits he flew through a red light (5 cars went through the yellow ahead of him). The other driver may have been approaching and not have to stop - saw the light was green from a distance and kept going - only to have the OP run the light. Unfortunate but hopefully lesson learned!

This is one of the advantages of not living in a big city. In rural Minnesota, lights often have pre-yellow yellows, at least on busier roads.

There are signs with flashing lights that you can see half a mile before random lights out in the middle of nowhere to warn you that it will be turning yellow soon. The lights start flashing and then you say in your head "better slow down".

Sorry to hear about your misfortune, but that sounds like a really short yellow.

This is a case of someone timing the light (the other driver). There is no way they went from zero to sixty in less than 3 seconds. The other unfortunate thing here is that it sounds like the red light does not buffer a few seconds before turning green to opposing traffic. Down here when one side turns red, there is a 5 second delay to account for those who insist on running the light by gunning the piss out of their car when they see a yellow signal.

This time it ended badly. Sorry about your luck.

i'd watch what you say in public especially on the internet about the accident in case there were injuries. These statements could be used against you.

Unfortunately, from the way you described the accident, it looks like they will pin the fault on you. Being that you said the light had turned yellow by the time you entered the intersection, the cops most likely told you "If it was yellow before you entered the intersection, you should have stopped". This happened to me a few years back when I was ticketed for running a red light. I tried to explain that it was yellow when I entered the intersection, but the cop wasn't having any of it. This was before I got my IOM, so I can't blame the copy for targeting my Camaro. Ha! Ha!
