Don't Sleep on My V6
|
Update from Derrick:
"Not going to well running on street tires and I can't open it all the way up in any gear. Going to put the slicks on. Rhino is even spinning with slicks." I asked and he said that track prep isn't good. So lets hope that the slicks work. As he updates me I'll post. Sent from my Samsung Galaxy S III

I appologize for the lack of communication and the delay. I didn't get home until this morning. I couldn't get on the forum with my phone and it wasn't until Cisco sent me a text that I though to use that to let you know how it was going. That also quit working so ended up just calling him. I think I woke him up, so if I did, sorry Cisco.
We put the slicks on Rhino's car first because I wanted to hit that 11.5x in street dress. First pass I launched at around 4K RPM and just spun like crazy. I didn't get it back under control until I almost hit third then it spun again and I had to feather the throttle all the way down the track. Result: 60'... 1.970 1/8... 7.927@91.74 MPH 1/4... 12.059@121.26 MPH So a lot worse than the shakedown at Centerville. Second pass I launched at about 2.8K RPM and it still spun. I would slowly ease into the throttle and every shift it would fishtail again and I'd have to back off. I finally got to full throttle right at the end of the 1/4th. I almost got out of the grooves a couple of times. Result: 60'... 2.126 1/8...7.857@100.37 MPH 1/4...11.812@124.44 MPH (who's the king now?) That run had everyone coming over to see the car. ParisTNDude was there and I think he got this one on video. I can't wait to see how far I left the Charger behind once I got the spin under control. Well about this time Rhino's diff. let go and he was doing peg-legged burnouts. He was in the mid 10s but wasn't going to risk not being able to drive home. So, we swapped the slicks onto my car (street tires up front). I asked him to make the first pass and log it because it seemed like it was short shifting 3rd a bit. The car still had a terrible 60' but it was 7.158@102.10 for the 1/8th and BOOOOM! Smoke everywhere! He still managed to coast in with a 11.498 run (@95.91 MPH ). We won't know the root cause of the failure until we tear it down, but there were pieces of rods and bearings all over the place. Nice big hole in the block. Best guess we either bent a rod or the timing chain went out. Worst thing was we actually started wondering if I should have trailered one of the cars there just in case, but decided we didn't have time to go back for the trailer and truck. So, and to flatbed it back. Hope we didn't take the turbos out with chunks of flying metal. Also, they said they found what looks like a piece of bell housing on the track as well, so I'm hoping my new converter didn't get trashed. BTW, that thing was awesome. I was only losing about 1K on the 2-3 and 3-4 shifts. On the street is we've got it locking up at 45 MPH and it is just as smooth as glass. LOVE IT. I'll post up some slips later, but I have to go take care of some stuff with the car and pick up all the stuff folks brought home for me. Wish I had broken into the 10s, I know everyone was hoping for it. I think we would have had it if she would have held together for the whole pass. Just got build it better and stronger.

So sorry that the block let go but wow if it can do 11.4 spinning down the track, I can't wait to see what this thing can really do. The potential is insane on this thing! Congrats Derrick, you're the new v6 king

Wow Derrick...that is a super exciting, yet horrible post all at the same time.
I think Rhino's run in your car could have nabbed a high 10 second run as from what I can tell from looking at 1/4 mile time slips, a low 7 second 1/8 results in a very low 11 second 1/4 mile, and your car picks up more steam as it pulls down the track, so I think you would have broken into the 10s......which is amazing. BUT DAMMNNN....your car blew up!!????? :( That just sucks man....sucks isn't even the word for it. I hope you can bounce back from it again soon. There is so much anticipation for seeing a car like this hit the track with a good pass.

Like you said last night rebuild but rebuild stronger. I really hope that multi disc isn't scrap, that was one of the key elements for those awesome passes. Congrats and push on, now you have me thinking about timing chain upgrades that aren't even available. I just had mine looked at last week and all is well for now. All I can say is the pioneer has reclaimed his title back
