Question oil change question...

This may be a stoopid question but I'd rather ask a stoopid question than make a stoopid mistake!
I've done PLENTY of oil changes… just not on the LS engines.
Is there anything out of the ordinary I should know when changing my oil on the SS?
It takes a huge amount… is there a cooler? I think I remember reading that but now I cant remember if it was a trans cooler!
If there IS a cooler, how do I get all of the oil out, and back into, the cooler without overfilling the engine?

Thanks!

that means that the mirror is 38.75% the size of the vertical windshield...
it sure seems like the ratio could be better... just sayin....

Have the dealer change your oil and you won't have to worry about it at all! Seriously, the oil cooler... and I can't remember if the SS has one or not either... will not drain when you change the oil anyway. Usually they are mounted in the front of the car in front of the radiator however, I have seen oil pans with a built in oil cooling system... usually just some heat sink type fins on the bottom but I know the Camaro doesn't come with those!

changing my own oil offsets the price of having my own lift!
now that i have a Camaro (with so much synthetic) my lift will pay for itself sooner.

Other than 8 qts., nothing different from most any other oil change. There is a cooler just in front of the filter and I believe it will drain. Be advised that a lot of oil drains when you remove the filter. It caught me by surprise and made quite the mess.

did you get 8 qts back out?

... Also, why have you already changed the oil? ... You can't have more than a couple thousand miles on it.... or did I miss something about changing it early the first time.

If you're gonna be worried about the filter spray get it loose enough to turn by hand and poke a hole in the bottom with a pocket knife. Then turn it a little more till the gasket separates from the engine come back to it in 10 minutes and most of the oil will have drained out.

Also don't forget to put some oil on the new filter's gasket.

It's recommended to change a new car's oil at the 500 mark as there are tiny fragments of metal left over from the manufacturing process. By changing the oil at 500 miles you allow the oil to gather the majority of the fragments and flush them out. You then change the oil again when your car has 2,000-3,000 miles to get the remaining fragments out. After this change the oil at the normal intervals.

read the owners manual. it will tell you what you need to know about capacities, and anything else you need to do. Reading really is fundemental.

Just had mine changed... (8 qts exactly just like the manual says) takes a while for the oil to show on the dipstick. I watched the guys put 8.5 in... of course after a wait we had to drain 1/2 qt. Bring your own filter too. I used K&N. Most places don't have listings, but it's the same as the vette.

My lessoned learned is to let it sit a while before checking the dipstick.
