DIY Ramp to change oil *****
1) I purchased 2 - 10 foot 2x10's and had an old 2x4 sitting around.
2) I cut the 2x10 in lengths: ...... 4 1/2 feet - 2 each ...... 3 1/2 feet - 2 each ...... 2 feet - 2 each 3) Used wood screws to fasten together, building from bottom up. 4) Put a 2x4 in front to prevent car from rolling off the front. You could vary the length of the cuts from above, but this works fine for me and only need to purchase 2 of the 2x10's at $18 total.

Nice job!
A few questions: 1) How heavier are these ramps and and is it hard to store? 2) Are you concerned that it would be more likely for the tires to slip off while driving on the ramp? |

i am not at all concerned about driving on them. just line them up carefully and drive up slowly. even if you are off by a bit, the care is not going to slip off. you would have to be way off line and very crooked to have the car fall of the ramps. mine are 10" wide and i have no problems with them. |

nice idea. I just might make a pair. Question, any possibility the ramp might tilt up and smack against the underside as the tire initially gets on the square edge of the first step?

Why didn't you angle cut the leading edge of each step for an easier drive up?

I made mine with 4 levels of 2x10's. Since they are only 1.5 inches tall, that only brings it up 6 inches, which is enough for oil changes. I would think three levels is too tight. I also did cut the front of each board on a 45 degree angle, it does make a difference. They are heavy, but you will never have a problem with them. They are so strong you could drive a 10 ton dump truck on them for an oil change

No chance of slipping off, that is why I used the 2x4's at the top end. If you use 2x10 you should have no excuse for missing the ramp!
I didn't trim off the front because it is unnecessary. It'll step up that 1 3/4 inch with no problem. If you have spare time to blow...cut away! These weigh probably 30lb or so and I store them in front of my Blazer. I tip one on top of the other and makes a box. You could store on the wall I suppose.

Hey all, I was the one who posted the original thread with the link on how to build these ramps. I can totally vouch for everything drtwo is saying about their weight! They are freakin heavy. I did cut the ends at an angle just for kicks. Since you're cutting the boards why not just tilt your saw to 45 degrees? It's totally not necessary though. I also added thicker end stops on the very top piece to ensure you don't take a dive over the end. I've thought about adding casters or something to the very end so that you can pick up one end and roll them away but haven't done that yet. All in all, very sturdy ramps and much cheaper than anything you can buy that's pre-made!

I built my ramps this weekend. Mine are 10.5" high by 60" long. I staggered my levels by 6 inches. While this is an inexpensive pair of ramps I think eventually I will be buying a pair of the race ramps.
Lessons learned from my build: *These things are heavy as hell - 2x10 lumber weighs about 3.37 a linear foot so my ramps weigh about 85 pounds each. *10" wide works but can have a tendancy to wiggle as your drive up them. Once I was on my ramps my tires were hanging over the side by 3 inches. I had to jack the car up and move the ramps square under the tires. 12" may be a better width. *10.5" in height gets the camaro plenty high in the air. Jack stands on the rear would be plenty of height to do exhaust or shifter work. *In writing this post I cant spell. Cheers K |

my car is supper low .i have the razzy lower vailence and mabe 3 inch clearance.i also made this exact set this summer . i cant get a jack under the front of my car and the ramps work perfect. i have a pair of the plastic ramps from autozone and the suck .well for me anyway.

Im not sure If I should build this one or the other ones that were on a write on guide because this one has three levels and the link for the other one has four levels and my camaro Is stock as far as a lift kit Its a 1994 Chevy Camaro V6 3.4L Car.
