Engine animation..... pretty cool.

I was surfing around looking for my next mod and found some pretty cool animations on a engine and the rotating assembly, VVT, and such.

Shows how the whole intake, compression, spark, exhaust, cam, lifter, etc....... works and how VVT works too. The VVT is something I just didn't know much about. Pretty cool stuff I thought.

The first in not an LS series engine but it's a pushrod engine so same type and same process. The second is only a 4 cylinder and overhead cam, not pushrod but a good representation of intake, compression, spark, and exhaust with the valves. The VVT one is overhead cam but gives a little insight of what the cam is doing in a VVT situation.

Feel free to correct the vids if they are wrong or if you can give any insight.

Interesting. My wife's Vibe has VVT. Didn't know how it worked though.

Nice finds! I'll have to watch them again on a bigger screen (than my iPod) when I get home!

Now once you get your head around that, try to get it wrapped around this (with its 3 moving parts!):

EWE!!! IT LOOKS LIKE A STINKY WINDSOR ENGINE!!! EWE!!! lol

That's pretty cool, but it looks like they have the intake and exhaust timing backward on the V8... I must not be seeing it correctly...

Have you done a search on valve float? That's SICK!

Now, speed it up so that it does that it cycles about 10 times a second, thats roughly how fast an engine will spin at idle. 6k rpm = 100 times per second.

That was the best animation I've seen; I still got an aneurism trying to watch and understand it.

Wankel's make my head want to explode.

I would still be driving my twin turbo RX7 if the Camaro wasn't reborn this way and they made better torque.... :(

So are the rotors considered cylinders, per se?

Well, the rotor themselves would be "considered" the "pistons as it were". The housings are the combustion "chambers". And to really twist your brain, the path that the rotors travel is "epitrochoidal".

Its funny how people nowadays think VVT is so new and cool. In all reality honda has been doing variable timing since the early 90s. So when I see a company talk about VVT im not impressed.

Each rotor is akin to 3 cylinders (well, pistons if you want to be picky). But since it completes the equivalent to a 4 stroke cycle (suck, squeeze, bang, blow) it will fire 3 times each cycle, which is the same as what a 6 cylinder engine does.
