I already bought the yellows - they were just to cheap to pass up - the silvers were more $s and less in stock at the time.... sanding - elbow grease and paint.

Also sycraft, what splitter is that you are running? I like it.

If you're seeing a difference in braking effort, it's not because of the 6-piston calipers. It's most likely due to the change in pad compound you probably made at the same time you changed calipers, in addition to the braided steel lines and brake fluid you probably changed as well.

The 6-piston caliper has a clamping force very similar, if not the same as the 4-piston calipers. Force is equal to pressure divided by the area. The 4-piston calipers utilize 4 larger pistons over a smaller pad area, and the 6-piston calipers utilize 6 smaller pistons over a larger pad area.

The brake system is designed to be balanced, and a car will stop the fastest when it utilizes the maximum possible grip if ALL 4 tires. The front brakes are larger because of the forward weight shift under braking, which increases the weight on the front tires, and removes weight on the rear tires. This increases front grip, and reduces rear grip. The brakes are sized with that in mind, as is the calibration of the ABS. In other-words, due to the higher front grip, a higher clamping force is used on the fronts, this also generates more heat, and with more heat, you need a larger heat sink...

The rear CTS-V/ZL1 rear brakes are the same as the SS. If the CTS-V/ZL1 front brakes increased the braking force on the fronts, the rears would be working less, as the fronts would reach peak grip further ahead of the rears, which would result in greater stopping distances as the rears wouldn't be contributing as much as they could.

Brake pads may seem, and feel, like an incompressible material, but they do compress, and the amount they compress is determined by their chemical makeup and construction. Brake calipers flex as well, some more than others. There's a lot that can change the feel of the brakes, without changing the stopping distance.

At the end of the day, the tires stop the car…

A good example of this might be the Head-to-Head Motortrend did with the Mustang GT & the 1LE. Both cars are similar in girth, with the Mustang being ~70 pounds lighter. The 1LE has 4-piston front calipers, and the Mustang has 6-piston front calipers.

Despite being the bigger, heavier car, with smaller 4-piston front calipers, the 1LE stopped 8 feet shorter than the lighter Mustang with its larger 6-piston front calipers; presumably due to the greater grip of the 1LE's tires (but there can be other contributing factors).
Hmm, I'm using the same pad compound as before and the larger surface area of the 6 piston pad would require less hydraulic pressure to generate the same given amount of torque.

With the increase in forward weight shift, the balance would be kept in check by the reduced line pressure preventing the rear from over braking and the increased torque capacity handling the extra load up front.

Are the cts v brake lines really needed? I cannot find an accurate part number for the 08-15 cts v. I'm putting these on a 2010 ss camaro

IIRC they need to be longer. Talk to Tyler @ JDP he can set you up with a set. I think you can also get the ZL1 SS lines and should be G2G.

We use the Goodridge lines for the ZL1; part # 12227. Let me know if I can answer any questions for you!

Best regards,

I just got mine back from Mike The Powdercoater. They look great. I mean great. I'll be installing tomorrow. Here's a dumb question. Are the pads top loading like the SS? Just remove the center bolt, drop them in, install pin kit and reinstall center bolt? Or mount them in the caliper and the install caliper? Thx.

They go in from the top. IIRC you have the center bolt then the two pins that hold down the retention spring. Make sure to put some grease on the backs of the pads so you don't get any squeaks...
