ZL1 oil consumption
Just wondering how much oil you use between changed?
First oil change I used 1qt. I am about 1000 miles from lof #2 and it looks to be about 1 QT low again. Just seems to be alittle much for a car with 5k on it. If I went a full 6k between changes I would have to add 2 qts.... My driving is aggressive but I drive all my cars hard and none use oil like this one. My truck doesn't use any oil between changes. Jeep uses about 1/2 qt

I change the oil every 5000 miles and I don't seem to burn any.

oil changed every 5k miles after 1st oil change at 1k miles, no oil loss at all between oil changes, barely any in the catch can (drain can every other oil change yields about 2 oz). and surprise, surprise I was one of the ones who drove it like I stole it from day 1.

Odds are (and yes, the haters can hate) if broken in like GM advises (or Ford/Chrysler, etc.) you will not have proper ring seating and will have oil consumption issues. Some get lucky for sure, but most will use oil forever if during that critical first 500 miles....and joes a perfect example as even the blowby is so light his catchcan shows very little ingestion through the PCV system. But don't want to get into the public relations vs. actual what we as engine builders see debate. The important thing is CHECK oil level every 1000 miles like your engine life depended on it (it does). |

I wasn't hard on it the first 500 miles. (under 4000rpm and tried to stay less than 75% throttle) I did have my couple of show of to the buddies moments before 500 mile but nothing to bad. I did start to get on it more after that but no full out wide open runs to 100mph till I was after 1500 miles. At 3000 miles the oil was changed and I took it for its first track day.

Just did another track day and it didn't seem to use any oil, I was harder on it than ever. Bouncing off the rev limiter at the end of the straights. Maybe I will be ok....
I will up date you guys at 7000 when I change it.

I run Amsoil. My last oil change interval was 12,000 miles. The dipstick showed no loss of oil. There has been a bit in the catch can a couple times. I followed the factory break-in fairly close. I run it hard fairly frequently and I do check the oil level regularly.

I followed the break in procedure fairly close and I seem to be using about a quart every 3500-4000 miles. I do seem to collect a lot in my catch can as well.

...there has been one previous thread on this topic and it did not go far. I for one would like to see this thread have some legs where owners of the ZL1 report their personal experiences and observations. I changed my oil at 1,600K. It was down by guestimation 1 quart. <Now take into account the fact this could have been breakin, or supply shortage off the line> At that point I installed a RX ZL1 catch can. I have placed 300 miles on it since then. No loss of oil on the stick, and not a drop in the drain tube. I broke it in with exuberance.

My car is not using any oil, I monitor it closely, and have been experimenting with Amsoil and Mobile One, also with different filters, so for the Mobile one and Wix filter combination is the best.
