NBC Bringing Top Gear Pilot to United States

Yay!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Source InsideLine.com
Quote:
BURBANK, Calif. — NBC has ordered a pilot for an American version of the U.K. smash sensation Top Gear. Although the show apparently will feature a completely new cast, producers say it will still feature "the irreverent spirit of Top Gear."

With the Writers Guild of America still striking in full force, networks have been scrambling for non-scripted content. In practice, this has led to helpings of The Biggest Loser 5 and Celebrity Apprentice — and to NBC's decision to bring Top Gear to the United States.

The Office is the most recent example of a BBC program that has done well in a U.S. adaptation, and Top Gear is NBC's shot at repeating that success. The British show features the expected test-drives of supercars — but also more lighthearted segments such as a giant game of soccer with a bunch of tiny VWs, or a contest to see which host can build the best amphibious car to drive across a lake.

Ben Silverman, NBC co-chairman, seems to think it's a brilliant move. "Top Gear is a proven international hit which fits perfectly into NBC's lineup of programming with male appeal, including Sunday Night Football and American Gladiators," he said in a statement. "We're always looking for innovative ways to partner with our advertisers, and this show offers a great platform for the latest in car culture."

What this means to you: If NBC is using the show as "an innovative way to partner with their advertisers," will that stop the hosts from trashing vehicles, even if they're made by an NBC sponsor? Let's hope not. — Paul Tassi, Correspondent

I LOVE TOP GEAR!!!!!!! It will be really hard to find hosts as funny and as good as explaining the car the way they do when driving. I hope they find good hosts and that they dont just copy the british shows and think of new ideas.
They will probably test the new CAMARO when it comes out if the show lasts.

I also Love The Office. I have seen the british version and its not as funny but The Office does take some ideas from the british show. It is a perfect example.

I might catch it out of pure curiousity, but they can not in a million years match Clarkson, Hamster, Captain Slow and The Stig. Just not gonna happen. And there's no way they're gonna let anyone trash cars on the show like Clarkson does, which a HUGE appeal of the original IMO.

But, it'll be a North American-oriented show....so......what if - hang with me here - they bash Euro-cars? That would be friggen' Hilarious.

Irony at the very least. I can't wait to see the pilot.

It will be corporately biased. He who pays the bills will get the best reviews, or at least the most airtime. Its an unfortunate reality of corporate sponsorship.

I wish they were just importing the real episodes. A new version just wouldn't be the same. I mean do you think an American show would turn a Reliant into a working Space Shuttle? Do you think an American show would be allowed to race cars against trains, planes, and boats?

yesh, actually, I do... I think it would be fun to try and make a PT Cruiser into a space shuttle... and I think that racing a Corvette against a speed boat is possible in several places, most notably Miami and Houston, where I know there are channels that have long roads next to them.

Unfortunately I think you're right.
No network will allow the hosts to trash a GM car if they are a sponsor or paying for advertising during the show. The same goes with ANY manufacturer. Possibly the only way it could happen is if it were on the SPEED channel...not NBC. Especially now during the strike, all they care about is bringing in cash.

Just to add a little info to the thread....

http://www.autoblog.com/2008/01/31/r...-i-top-gear-i/

If one of these guys hosts though, rest assured, it will be on NBC, not SPEED or anything else....both of these guys are NBC-lifers, if you will.

I'd be okay with Jay. Jerry... not a huge fan, but he is a car guy....maybe...
