Live axle swap kits available?
We have an 03 SVT Cobra, and one great thing about it was that the GT live axle provisions were all in the car, so we immediately tossed the rear Independent system for a "Bulletproof 8.8".
I would love to toss the IRS on my Camaro as well, and i know with fabrication the COPO car gets a live axle, but is there any kit out there to simplify a live axle install for us at home? Sent from a Galaxy Note 2, far far away. |

I know Extream Innovation does a soild rear axle swap, but it is not a DIY. A lot of fabrication needs to be done, and you will need to have a fuel cell mounted in your trunk.

It has been done by Extreme Innovations and JW Fabricating and there is no kit out there and never will be as it requires alot of modification and fab work to make it fit and it is VERY expensive but it can be done and the cars that have done the swap are insane at launching just as the COPO.

I dont see a point to it unless your trying to run insane times. 11-10 sec cars would be a wast of money! Do some drag coil overs, rear drag bar and solid bushings would be all you need. If you want to run 8s and have that kind of money then I can see doing it then.

Look at the rears of some of the fastest IRS cars out there and see the tricks they are using, while still keeping it IRS.
Start with adjustable coilovers so you can set the rear end height to take most the angle out of the CV joints. And to be able to adjust the shocks for the best launch. Arms, links, solid bushings... Hammerhead or Strange Dana 60 for a center section... Then pull out the sway bar and fab in a huge anti roll bar. The type seen on pro built 4 link door cars. With the huge anti-roll bar and the rear suspension set up with the axles pretty much in a straight line across the back... it will act very close to a straight axle. The anti-roll bar takes some fab work, but the rest will be bolt in. That red ARH drag car is set up with a big anti-roll bar IRS rear and runs 8's. |

I think you would be pretty happy with our 9" IRS kit, we pull 1.27 60ft times in our shop car (05 GTO) and that is a record for the GTO. The solid rear conversion guys are not even getting 60's that low.
With our 35 spline inner stubs and big 31 spline axles, you can hang right there with the solid rear guys. IRS rears have come along ways. We are even working on a 9" IRS kit for the 03-04 Cobra.. Thanks Chris |

As stated, Moser has a live axel retro fit worked out. Complete assembly ready with some removal of stock mounting brackets. This is surely an expensive fix to a very stupid oversight on the part of GM. Really, if you need an independent rear end by a Corvette. The independent wouldn't be so bad if it weren't such a weak piece. I inquired on this topic at Strange Eng. 2 years ago and they said NO WAY. Bad move on their part. Kudos to Moser.
