Thinking of "upgrading" to a V8 SS or 2SS...

Hey so I've had my Camaro for about a year and a half now (March of 2013 I bought her) and I'm thinking of upgrading to an SS model next spring...

Basically looking for some thoughts on either trading in for a new one (we have some sweet 0% interest offers going right now in my area) or selling privately. Also, do you think it would be worth it? I'm kinda torn lol. I have read countless threads on people who bought V8's and absolutely love them...

Thing is though, I've done a bunch of upgrades to my current V6: SLP Loudmouth II exhaust, brand new winter and summer tires, brand new summer wheels, custom interior paint, sequential tail lights, etc. Trying to figure out if the pros of the V8 will outweigh all the $$$ and time I've put into the V6.

Thoughts?

I'd wait til 6th gen. But otherwise, YES the V8 is very much worth it! All the money you put into the car is small work so for. Hopefully you can get something back for it.

I had a 02 V6 Camaro, than a 02 Trans Am; the difference was astronomical. I feel that you would feel the same way if you got a SS.

What everyone else says. For me personally, I've always *only* wanted a V8, and was willing to wait for it, but that was just my personal preference-I was tempted by the V6 version more than once!

Personally, I'd wait for the new V8 models: 6th Gen, Challengers, or '15 Mustangs before pulling the trigger.

This is only really something you can answer. IMHO is the upgrade worth it in my eyes NO for the simple reasons that you will lose $$ on trade in or selling it. How much do you currently owe on it. Will the car be a daily driver or a garage queen (both of my cars are garage queens a V6 and V8 Camaro and they sit 95%-98% of the month under a car cover), do you really need the power and where will you use it. If you just want to have a V8 to say you have a V8 and it makes you feel better than do it. If you are going to be upside down more than $2000 on the trade NO. IMHO I would hold of on purchasing a 5th Gen and wait to see what the 6th Gen looks like I would rather have the new model vs. the older model IMHO.

I am at a point in my life where engine size and speed do nothing for me these days. Sure 6-7 years ago it was oh I have to have the V8. But as time goes on I understood I did not need nor did I ever use the V8 power. Sure don’t get me wrong it sounds great and it’s nice to know you have it but for me it was not a factor in deciding on my purchase of a 5th Gen. Now does that mean I will not purchase another V8 sports car NO depending on what the 6th Gen looks like I will hold off for one of those or pick up a 2015 ZL1 vert as my 3rd Garage queen.

Go and test drive a SS, it will clear up all your questions.

From a financial standpoint, no, it's not "worth" it. You're spending more money on a more expensive car that's going to cost more to run (gas, tires, insurance). Paying off your V6 and driving it until the wheels fall off is the financially savvy thing to do. Especially considering the money sunk into accessories.

That said, a year and a half is about when I've observed most people (including myself) become bored with a vehicle. There is that.

There's always a way to twist the numbers and make a longer list of positive things that outweigh the decision to keep your current car. Been there, done that too. "But I can get the new one at 0%" or "The resale value is higher" or "insert seemingly plausible reason to trade, here".

Want it because you want it, realize there's going to be an absurd cost and time wasted while trying to get ahead on larger financial goals, and make the decision. Maybe you're filthy rich and none of this is a factor?

The SS is a great car, get whatever you want, do it because you want it. Don't waffle on the dumb stuff. If you have all your other finances in order, DO it. If not, then my personal advice would be to have some restraint, fix things up (savings/retirement/debt) and buy a faster car later down the road when you get to a point where you can really enjoy it.

This (among other reasons, primary being I use it as my daily driver) is why I opted for the V6.

My suggestion would be to make sure that you REALLY want an upgrade and that you don't turn around in another year looking to buy something else. Unless you can afford to buy these cars outright, which by mentioning interest rates I assume not, you really have to look at your future.

IMO, wait for at least the 6th gen to come out. This way you have about a year to continue thinking and have the possibility of a 6th gen or can probably find a deal on a 5th gen somewhere.
