Richmond 4.10 gears in the rear
Wanted to ask the board, It would appear that about 5 months ago Richmond was having a rash of 4.10 failures with this unit. I too had a failure of this rear but my condition was more recent seeing that I purchased the unit 5 months ago but only found the time to install it last week. My failure was within less then 500 miles of being installed...
Between all the members out there who have either changed to new 4.10 Richmond's with success or with failure. Has there been failures in the last 2 months? I want to see if I get a replacement set would I suffer the same fate or do you think the issue was corrected by Richmond with newer units. Please give me your thoughts... Reading all the Blogs I have found 17 cases on the board from different members who state failures, ( myself included ) but they all had there issues around July of 2010, +/- ( same time i bought mine )

We had two customers suffer failures back during the time frame you mentioned (July-August) and since then have not heard about any more until yours.

I'm wondering if the Failure was a certain batch, it would be great to see if there was any install dates of build codes on the Richmond box that we could identify

With 638 rwhp I'm not surprised it broke. Do these gears break with stock cars also? If so, than Richmond sucks and should stop making them.

I've had mine on since May and have put almost 11K miles on them since w/ no issues. No drag racing pulls here, but plenty of hard accelleration runs.

It seems there must have been a bad batch of gears with bad steel. Richmond has replaced all the broken gears I have read about or know about. I have one of the first sets I got in a group buy from a seller on this forum, and they are still holding up. I can't stress enough having a experienced installer put them in and a heat cycle break in period. Then change the oil again. With as much power as you have, maybe the 3.73's might be better.

During the break in the 4.10 made the car so smooth. The take off was very light compared to the stock 3.45, which with the power I was pushing made it want to jump. I liked how they made the car run and during Friday night run at the track I went from a 126 top MPH in the 1/4 to a 133 top MPH in the 1/4 ( major difference ).
I would like to use the Richmond again and I am starting to think they had a bad run during that time... I wanted to hear if anyone had installed in the last 4 months after august.

The Richmond 3.73s have not suffered a single failure that I am aware of. I can also set you up with Lingenfelter 3.70s for the same money.

Really? Well that is encouraging, I was under the impression that all richmond gears had issues on the new camaro. I will need to rethink this over. Thanks for the info apex.

No problem. There was a rash of 4.10 failures back during the summer but there have not been any since, until this instance. The 4.10s and 3.73s are designed differently and the 3.73s have had zero issues. Richmond has always been known for the strength of their gears which is part of why people were so dumbfounded.

could it just be that there are no reports of 4.10 failures lately because it's winter and not nearly as many people on this forum are driving their cars right now, let alone aggressively driving them.

The failures all came during a pretty tight time frame and seemed to end prior to the cold weather setting in. Richmond made some changes including their recommendations for installation and since then the failures have not been occurring.

As for the Lingenfelter 3.70's, they are actually made by AAM, the same company that makes the original gears in the car. Haven't heard of one fail yet but I don't think many are running them as they are a little more costly.
