Brake Dust !!!!
Hey all,
I go for a 10 mile ride around the lake and the rims have a nice coating of brake dust, CHRIST!! I get tired of cleaning the rims every day only to find small scatches in the clear coat on the rims. What are people using to fend off this menace!!. Has anyone noticed that the clear coat on the rims is weak. I have a 2002 Silverado HD w/polished alluminum rims and the have held up great for all these years, Whats UP ! |

Yeah our clearcoat sux...
You can get some Hawk pads...they last a lot longer and they will certainly reduce dust depending which brake compound you choose. If you are interested, get in touch with me. |

I feel your pain....I hate the brake dust too. But, I can't let it become a hooptie!

Freaking brake dust is an issue with these pads. I have 1500miles on the 2SS now and the brake dust just keeps on coming Has anyone with more miles on their machine noticed if it gets better after more miles?

Nope...I have 3k miles, and it is still bad.
I am going to install the Hawk pads when I do a full brake upgrade this fall. I carry them and I have installed on other high performance vehicles and they are WELL WORTH IT!!! |

I hear Hawk pads eat up the rotor quickly though? Is this true? Do you have to get a whole new brake system with rotors, etc to get the full effect?
Thanks Joe

You just have to stay on them, use plenty of water clean them and keep them polished an that will help keep the brake dust down a little.

They will not eat rotors...if you are going with the racing compounds then I would say new rotors are a good idea. If you are just using their first level of pads, which are better than stock by far!!! then you will be fine, they will wear at least as long as stock pads, and will have less dust.

i recommend first washing the wheels with dawn and make sure there clean, then use meguiars clay bar kit and get all the spots of the wheels, then go over with meguiars scratchx 2.0, then use something like meguiars polish, and then a wax like meguiars nxt gen 2.0 tech wax. This should make them look super nice and wheel dust should come off easy as pie! iv never personally done all this (iv done clay bar and nxt gen 2.0) and dust comes off so much easier so imagine taking it a step further! i like to use meguiars gold class wheel cleaner to because i know cheaper wheel cleaners will slowly break down wax, IV SEEN IT!

I agree that the dust makes me CRAZY. Even though I figured it would be more Snake Oil, I purchased the new ArmorAll wheel protectant...I'm shocked, it actually works. Instead of 2 miles and dirty, I find myself looking for dust...Covered the calipers with newspaper and sprayed the snot out of the wheels. Let it dry and presto, way less mess....I will buy more....AZ5G

Get the Hawk Ceramic pads and put it to bed. I tried every trick in the book and the winner is the Ceramic pads. What I noticed is that they dust up but the dust is a much ligher color so the wheels look cleaner longer.

No brake dust for me now that I have chrome wheels. I had to clean my SS polished wheels even after a short drive. Dust doesn't stick to chrome.

I know how you feel about brake dust and my brother told me about Armor All Wheel Protectant and I watched a few videos on Youtube and I gave it a try and true to everything I have heard, it works like a Champ!
I would say that anyone having an issue with brake dust to give this product a try.
