Top unlock at speed?
I was cruising with my buddy at about 85 yesterday. He's always clowning around about something when he reached up grabbed the top unlock handle and asked, what happens if I turn this??? I told him he'd prolly die but I really don't know. Anyone?

it's like the handbrake - these are things best left alone by the passenger
If said passenger can't be grown up about it, said passenger can no longer ride with you |

the top will rip open and if your passenger has strong hands they may be ejected through the opening like a cartoon character...plus your gonna have a terrible repair bill :(

It would pop-up, likely get destroyed, and according to owner's manual, NO warranty coverage for doing so. Additionally, depending on the traffic carnage you cause behind you, you may have to buy smokes, K-Y, and nylons for your new cellmate, Bruno

Just say, "I don't know. What happens I grab you by the throat and pull?"

As a fellow Vert owner, I frown on your passenger's shenanigans!

haha no, but I can imagine. If the top didn't forcefully eject the passenger that did this, this driver most certainly would. Heard about many people doing this with T-tops too, kinda surprised the convertible latch doesn't have a key lock like those did. I always kept them locked in the Iroc just incase.

it would be a smart idea to have a mechanical lock so while the vehicle is in motion the top can NOT open...so it can only do its deeds while stopped...kinda like 99% of motor driven auto convertables on the market...but hey what do i know, i like the loony toon shinanigans to happen on youtube (not to me)

I would not suggest it, but if you do it, please film it!

I follow a easy method of preventing this though, don't move the car when the top is up.

Funny things happen at speed.
A few years ago, I was on a wide open stretch of highway. The car next to me wanted to go, and, being young and driving a fast car, I was up to the challenge. He gunned it, I gunned it. As we accelerated, somewhere in the neighborhood of 125 MPH or so, his passenger rolled down the window, just a bit. The air suddenly flowing into his classic GTO blew the back window out. It came out in one piece, which would have been recoverable, except for the fact that after it fluttered a hundred feet up into the air, it fluttered back down (still in one piece!), only to hit pavement with devastating- to- the- glass results (almost looked like mist when it disintegrated). Cool to watch, glad it wasn't my car. My sympathies to the owner. I cannot imagine what kind of effect one would get by letting a vert top catch just a wee breeze while in the dragster parachute position. Might just blow the rear window out, might turn the whole thing into a frame of roof with a few tattered shreds of sail billowing in the breeze. Odds are not good that you would be happy with any result. Maybe we can get the MythBusters to try it?!? |
