I really appreciate the feedback on scopes. I don't think I'd have ever looked in the $60 price range except for a BB gun or maybe a .22LR, but my son was looking online at prices around $100.

It does look like I should at least consider up to ~$300, which would include Nikons up into the ProStaff 5 range (I have looked through one of the 3.5-14's).

I bought a cheap Chinese scope once. It was in the trash in under 24 hours.

I've bought plenty of the lower tier brand name scopes, seems like I was always fiddling with zero season to season.

Then I let loose and bought a Vortex Viper. Discounted price was ~$800. If my tighta$$ is going to pay that for a scope it's also going to be mounted with a top shelf set of rings. That was another $200.

First mounted it on a new Savage bolt action .308.... I got walking strings, either the scope setup sux or the rifle/furniture is crap. Turns out it was the stock.

Next, mounted it on the .50..... it's a scope destroyer. Bore sighted it, checked it at 50 yds, adjusted, went to 300 yds, and tore up the 6" steel target! Shot about 20 rds 1moa or better, we have a winner!

Lately it's been living a hard life on my BN308. Dropped twice and banged around more than I like, it's keeping zero like I've never seen...

Like I said before, my only regret is not doing it sooner.

Haha! Ouch. Normally i'd would look into the $200 range like i did for my first scope. I got a Vortex for my M30 and it's great. On my next purchase Im going to put away a little $$ here and there so i can get something nice. Probably not in the $800 like some here but way better than the crap i got. Ill shoot for the 500 dollar range. Well honey, we won't be going to eat out for a couple of months. Daddy has toys to buy!

I think $500 is a sweet spot for high quality optics without too many frills. I went all out and got FFP and exposed turret just for easy ranging. Good reticle also.

Never had a Crossfire but the reviews are excellent for a ~$200 scope. I'd spend the extra premium for one with AO

I'm going the vortex route also. Good quality, reliability, good prices and, of course, a nice warranty. I'm actually looking at a reflex sight. $229 and if it's anything like my other sight, it will work just fine.

You've never used a red dot style (non-magnifying) sight?

I have several and am getting ready to put one on a pistol.

No. I've looked thru them, but never used one on a weapon. May try one on a 10mm pistol with 6" barrel if I ever get around to it.

They are quite fast for shooting. You can get into the red dot game for under $100 with something like a Bushnell TRS25.

For a pistol, I'd go smaller with something like a Vortex viper, venom, razor; Leupold Deltapoint; or Trijicon RMR. I'm going to put an RMR07 on a G29.

I forgot about the Burris Fastfire family and Docter Optics for pistols.
