I know that in my 07 WRX with just a tune I put down a 8.7 second 1/8 mile on my second run. And that's on garbage all-season tires. Swapping in a new turbo makes them really scream.

Power to weight ratio is a huge factor, especially with those little VW bugs. I've seen some keep up with GTR's and Supra's on a closed track. I love the old bugs and am working on getting one in the future to build and a new bug (2015+) turbo to build as well. It's always an awesome feeling when you get the surprised look on someone's face when they realize you beat them in a beetle of all things.

In my Camaro at the drag strip, I will not underestimate those little cars.

Just remember that any car, with enough money, can be made fast.

But going back to the STI you encountered, they have stout powertrains that come boosted from the factory. With a plethora of mods available for them they can easily make much more power than stock for relatively cheap. And with the weight advantage it's not hard to see how a properly modded STI can whoop even a big V8's ass.

AWD doesn't do a damn thing when you're already moving....especially if the OP isn't having traction issues from a roll. and with 411 to the wheels on the highway he shouldn't be hazing the tires so that's a moot point.

weight and probably a lot of boost is what got them the W this time.

Can anyone say big turbo kit? I had an SRT4 that would put it to Shelby's,corvettes,SRT-8s regularly at the drag strip.

I would have liked to talk to him after to find out what mods he had. From what I gather there is no way the engine was stock. The fact that it is lighter is impressive, especially considering the car has 4 doors and AWD. The latter of which makes it nice for driving in winter weather.

The only thing that helps me sleep at night is thinking they will have reliability issues making so much power out of a 2.5L engine? It is nice to know that we can make big power without any power train worries.

In my trips out West doing outdoorsy stuff, I rarely see Subarus (at least nowhere near the quantity back East). Drier/less snowy weather in general = less concern having AWD. It's really the only thing IMO that keeps Subaru in the game.

You'd think, but I just read an interesting article about Subaru earlier this week that refutes your quote above. Might want to read this.

Yes they are small, but it's not like their company is hanging on by a thread.

Oh I wasn't suggesting they were in trouble right now. Far from it. But as more and more competing car makers start adding AWD/optional awd to their vehicles, the uniqueness Subaru once had in the market is becoming greatly diminished. Where they sell well, they sell well because of the AWD capabilities. I would never even consider buying a non-AWD Subaru. Why bother?
